Guess I was lucky - I started playing in bars at 16, and I saw all the older guys acting like .... well, like you described Ian, and I found it very unappealing. I saved all my loot for toys! (but I DID chase my share of girls - caught a few too,but that's a tale for another day!) I know I'm a minority in the performers world - never play "gigs", never buy "cigs", never dance "jigs" ... I just sing.
