Back in 1999 I went to a restaurant in Los Angeles to see a favorite jazz keyboard player Freddie Ravel and his band play right in front of our dinner table. Halfway through the set he stopped and wished a friend of his who was eating at the restaurant a very happy birthday. He then invited him to come up and sing a couple of songs. Al Jarreau then walked up and performed amazingly. During the set break I walked outside for some air and passed Al in the hallway. I told him how thrilled I was to hear his impromptu performance. He just smiled at me and said "Singing on my birthday".
