OH, quick question? I have used the IH vocalizer with my Korg for years. One of the most convenient things was the fact that it rested on top of my board. The pedal turned it on and off, and as far as on the fly harmony went it's great. Buttons are arranged in a vertical patter, 5th below - 3rd below - dub you voice - 3rd above and 5th above.

With a quick press I can choose any or all combinations. It modulated accorded to the chord played at the time, and whatever note I sang. I'm sure the Solton is even better as to sound and application. This is mainly arrangements I'm referring to, not midi files, although you can do a similar thing. Have to pick a track though, so if the instrument isn't playing anything at that time, there is no chord info. Naturally arrangements are ALWAYS showing a chord recognition over all, so it was never an issue.

So I'm curious if the SD1 has that "live music" user friendliness. Does it have one touch buttons set up so you can say "Ok, give me upper 3rd harmony, (sing 4 lines), now I want a 3rd below as well (push), etc.

If so, does it follow whatever chord is playing on the style as well?

The Sd1 will follow your right or left hand chord progressions while a style is playing .
You can also program one of the foot switches and assign on and off assignments !

hope this helps

Well....sort of, but I still don't know if I control the TYPE of harmony with a one touch button format.

Can I choose instantly during a song between 1 harmony a third above, switch to 3rd 5th upper and 3rd below, switch back to just a 3rd above, etc.

Example:

Take it easy by the Eagles:

First time there is harmony is when you sing "Take it easy......Take it easy" I use both 3rd & 5th harmony above my lead note. when I come to the verse, I switch to just a 3rd harmony for "Well I'm a standing on a corner in Winslow Arizona...etc etc."

Then back to more voices added after.

This is done in arrangement, and because of the IH, it's as simple as pressing the buttons and lighting them up or turning them off.

---------------------------------------------
Pretend this is the physical machine in front of your face on top of the keyboard.
graphic:

(button) - 5th above

(button) - 3rd above

(button) - Lead (it would dub your voice to turn on)

(button) - 3rd below

(button) - 5th below

---------------------------------------

so any combination can be turned on or off together or separate. Very easy and quick.

Is this comparable to the SD1 vocalizer? Can you do this as easy on the fly with arrangements?

The buttons you want are hidden in menus, but can be written into different vocal "sets" You can call up a window that has this menu access and change access to sets on the fly, but NO - you can't just punch up a 3rd or a 5th at random without a lot of grief.

If you are using the LEFT assignment with a style , it is extremely easy to add a 3rd to the vocal . Example .....play a single C note and get a C major chord . If you add the E , you get the harmonized 3rd with the chord changing . Add the G and you get three part harmony without going to any menu at all .

Shit. I was afraid of that. So that means I'd be better off not to use styles in those instances. Better to record them as sequences. What a drag. You'd think they would realize that convenience with the harmony would be important.

I'm not sure if this is how you are meaning it, but are you suggesting playing notes in a specific pattern in order to control the harmony notes? That wouldn't be useful. Then any piano arrangements you played would have to be changed so you were only pressing the keys that would select the type of vocalizer intervals you wanted.

remember I am talking about live playing, not recording. So in any event it looks like my only other option is to preset one interval or intervals only and be satisfied with that for on the fly harmony.

Thanks a lot guys. It's good to know these things before you even start looking. You end up reading the manual 5 times over for something not there.

JustForFun000 (damn, what a long nick!),
I have the IH too, and the harmonizer card for the PA is FAR FAR AWAY from IH user friendliness in a live music environment, maybe because its main features are not about live performing.

While the IH sounds "electronic", I think it's surely worth its price.

All the reasons above point to why I still must carry an outboard harmonizer to work. I need flexibility and the internal units (all of them) just don'tmatch up so far. I rely on my vocals to carry the act,and I just can't compromise that area of my performance. The SD1 harmonizer SOUNDS great, as does the PA80board, but the user accessibility is no where near where it is with a dedicated unit.

Those built in units work well in SMF situations where the notes are written into a track and played back in vocoder mode, but in a live situation - I can duck & weave in and out of the arrangement with ease with my Digitech.(Vocalist VR)

Some things are easy to compromise on. My vocals are not up for grabs.

I remember ...your playing live . My example is playing live with a style . I hope you understand .

You have the Sd1 right ?
What have you found in the vocal edit modes ?
Have you tried customizing ?

justforfun000,

The VOCALIZER TO ARRANGER feature could be very helpfull (though I agree it doesn't replace direct access to chord modes).

With this feature, you can assign ANY Vocalizer mode & independent vocal settings to the START, STOP ARR A-D, FILL 1-3 & BREAK buttons. This way, when you are playing live and press any of these buttons, as your arrangement changes, so do your 'vocalists' based on what you programmed it to be!

This can be accessed from the VOCALIZER - EDIT -> Vocalize To Arr (F8). Remember to save this setting ... if you like it.

Thanks,

AJ
