I started this because I couldn't add to the other thread.

It is a steep learning curve with the Motif ES, but if you work with the board enough, it all starts to make sense.

I guess I just have to learn it if I want the sound quality I am looking for. I just wish it was more like an arranger format. I've said this a million times I know, but I think composing sections of a song an using the style features (intro, fill, end, variation, etc.) just seems more natural and intuitive. I want a Motif Arranger. The incredible patterns and sounds available in the MOTIF are what I'm after (coupled with good sweet voices), but I would like to use them to create a "style" and compose that way. Oh well, time to teach this dog new tricks I guess.

P.S. Interesting thought, I wonder if the MOTIF extras like the midi sample libraries, patterns/arps, sample CDs, and voice libraries can be imported in the Tyros. Perhaps that would be one way to "slick" up an arranger. Who knows, I'm dreaming again.

Voice libraries : Not likely Sean. The two boards likely share many of the same samples, but.. the way the voices are set up is different between the two. The Tyros ( at least from specs ) does not allow the same type of access to it's raw samples as the Tyros does.

sample CDs: No. The Tyros has no sampling capabilties

midi sample libraries, patterns/arps: Yes and No. To explain, the Tyros does not have an arpeggiator, but you could take the Es' arp and pattern data, save in a midifile, and then reintroduce it in the Motif as a Multi pad phrase or convert the midi data into style format. The advantage that the Es has is that unlike style data, arp data responds to the octave it's played in, and the notes and chord inversions that are applied. The Es also has several parameters that can be controlled without actually modifying the arp itself. Some of these can be done in real time, including gate ( note length ), velocity, swing time, and units ( notes per measure ).

I liked that the multi pad function on the 2000 ( unlike my PA80 ), allowed for playback of musical phrases, including user made ones. What I didn't like was that not only were you restricted to one octave, but there was no way to change the octave split point. I looked for ways to adjust this, including asking Michael P Bedesem, who is the creator of many good aftermarket ( actually freeware ) style creation / style enhancement programs, because he is very knowlegable about the Yamaha arranger OS and sff format. He did not know of any way to modify it either.
