With either of these Powered speakers, what is necessary for stereo?

Would either one of these work with a passive speaker for stereo? Or do you need a pair?

One with a passive speaker could be as low as $900.

The second speaker needs to be powered. However, you do not need two mixers, so the EX30 can be combined with an EX20 for some savings in weight and money.

Clif is correct - the EX30 has a built in stereo mixer, but only enough amps for one side of stereo. If you go with the Mackies, you need to use a mixer and effects too. The sound quality is still night & day difference, though. This is only an alternative if you want to save money or size or both. The Samson does NOT perform as well as the mackie. Just for the record, neither does the new powered EV 300sx series - I had a pair out at the end of August and the difference was far too great. I also A/B'd the Mackie to a Roland Cube100 and the Mackie blew it away. The cube is only 100 watts, but it has a 15' woofer and I always liked the sound......until I put them side ny side.
I'm so happy with the sound that it is now my main concern - the keyboard problems seem secondary now. I can make anything sound good through these puppies!
Don't misunderstand Boo,if you have a budget or the 51 lbs is an issue - then go for the Samson - otherwise, there really is NO choice. They sound too good to believe. The best part is the tight bass and smooth high end dispersion. It seems like the speakers are facing every direction.

What is Roland Cube100? Is it an older Roland product? Where can I find info on it?

Paul, It was released in 1985, Listed for $800, It is a 3 way system, 15 inch woofer, mid range horh and a seperate tweeter, rated at 100 watts[not overated, if anything it is under rated] . 3 band EQ and 2 pairs of inputs with volume controls.They have been my favorite since introduced. You can not buy them[pair] from me at any price[honestly]. I have tried them all, peavey, yorkville[ I liked the 300KB],Gallien Kruger,Fender,Carvin,JBL etc. Uncle Dave is right the 450's out punched the cubes in the upper area and I think the bottom end stayed with the 450. For me in stereo I still want my cubes. Did I mention I use them everyday for nearly 15 years, and they are just as good as the day I bought them. I am not convinced that the 450's suit me as well[warmth], maybe I am just too use to the cubes...Don't get me wrong I do like the Mackies[ maybe somebody will swear by them in 15 years like I do with the cubes..PS: I like the Old cubes a lot more than the new KC series[ and they"ain't " bad],,....

Roland Cube:



The 100 watt Roland Cube keyboard amp is no longer in production It was the creme de la creme keyboard amp of the late 80's and early 90's. The "cleanest" sounding keyboard amp of its' time. I wanted one "real badly" when I first started out synth keyboard gigging, but being the typical starving young musician, could only look on in envy while I instead, had to play thru my crappy sounding Peavy KB100 (sorry if I offended anyone here but I'm only giving my honest opinion). Times have changed a lot since then though, as there are more high quality keyboard amp options to choose from these days. I'm sure the Roland Cube-100 will still give the current amps a run for their money though. Fran, I tend to agree with you that the classic Cube-100 sounds better (cleaner) than the current Roland KC series amps.

That's NOT a cube 100 - it's either a 60 or a 40, but it looks like a cube60. Totally different animal. Only 2 way - uses a 12" speaker, has reverb. Nice amp in it;s day too.

The above picture (enlarged and re-posted to provide more detail) was found on a website which sells music (used) equipment and was listed as a Roland Super Cube-100. From my fond memories it seems like the Cube-100 with a 15" speaker I remember dreaming of owning. Also, I somehow remember that the smaller Cube-40 and Cube-60 amps had the word 'Keyboard' included on the logo plate. This has got me real curious now. Fran, could you possibly help clarify all this and post a pic of "your" Roland Cube-100 amp(s) for us? Thanks.
