I'm thinking about buying some special effects lights, some form of mood lighting that would change slowly from red to blue, to yellow, etc. Nothing elaborate, just something that can be used in dimly lit night club situations and dark, smoke filled bar-rooms. Any suggestions?

Not sure if they still make them, but they used to have ones that would go in front of xmas trees. Real simple deal with a rotating color wheel in front of a spotlight.

Just take a look at www.martin.dk
They sell very good lighting equipment, quite expensive but lasts for a very long time.
I'm using 8 Robocolor II lights which are used for 10 years now.

Make sure you are aware of a light's "Duty cycle" . Most high intensity bulbs can only be run for 15 minutes at a time. If you are planning to just turn it on and forget it .... buy something with NO duty cycle.....like a flood light bulb.

I have used strobo lights, colored cannons, laser and smoke system in parties for young public. My complaint is the short life of the expensive lamps ones, same the used ones in projectors(+ - 10 Hours).

Martin is too expensive..if you want to start from the lower end, American DJ is much more affordable (don't compare their quality to Martin, HES, or any 'professional' intelligent lighting out there though). Another "cheaper" alternative would be Elation brand. They have what you may need called "Color Changers" I believe. It's kinda like a Par 36 with a rotating, three-color disc. I searched a WHOLE lot of different companies when I was trying to build my own joint venture lighting company before. I'll try to find the links and send to you.
