The Yamaha PSR keyboards (including the Tyros) are designed so that the 4 style variation buttons can be configured (via auto fill button on/off activation) to either:

1) Immediately play the newly selected style variation (no fill preceding it)

or

2) Automatically play a 'fill in' before changing to the newly selected style variation.

I really like Yamaha's method because it makes triggering variations changes 'on the fly' (and automatically triggering fill-ins) a simple one button (intuitive) operation. On my KN5000, triggering fills-ins to precede style variation changes was rather cumbersome if I wanted to move from a style variation button which was not adjacent to one another: such as 1-3, 1-4, 2-4, etc. This required pressing TWO buttons at the SAME time

Is it possible, on either the Ketron XD9 or the 'new' Technics KN7000, to set things up so a 'fill-in' will play "automatically" preceding all style variation button changes, even changes like: variation 1 to 3 or variation 1 to 4?

Thanks in advance,

Scott

Scott,

With the Ketron products, there is a JUMP feature which allows the arranger to jump from one arrangement to another after a fill (one button) or you can immidiately go to an arrangement from another by again pressing just one button.
With the XD9, this jump feature also extends to the intro and endings (inverting each depending on if the feature is on/off).
Thanks,
AJ

AJ, Thanks for your response, but can you (or anyone else here) PLEASE CLARIFY
if the XD9's 'Jump Fill'feature allows you to jump (along with a fill) to 'non neighboring' style variations (ie: variation A to C or variation D to B) as well as 'neighboring' (A to B, and B to C) style variations?

I heard that the X1 allows you to jump (with fill) to neighboring style variations only, so I'm hoping (with the XD9) that Ketron has expanded the jump fill ability to include 'non neighboring' style variations as well.

Not that it helps answer your particular q here Scott, but just for general info, the PA80 allows it.

Bluezplayer: Thanks for the 'thumbs up' on this feature included on the Korg PA80. The ability to move to and from ANY style variation (with an auto fill preceding the variation change) is MUST in my book, so I hope the Ketron XD9 supports this as well. Waiting to hear from AJ Ketron, Dan O'Neil, George Kaye, or XD9 owners on this.

Thought I'd better follow up this thread as I received the answer to my question here via private email.

I'm disappointed to report that, when moving from 'non neighboring' style variations: BOTH the Ketron XD9 & Technics KN7000 do NOT support a 'one button' method of triggering a style variation change preceded by an auto fill.

Scott,
My old dinosaur i30 can easily be set to do this with one button push. The best keyboard on earth would be the i30 with the triton sounds. Korg really screwed up.

So far, it seems like ONLY Korg & Yamaha come up as WINNERS in the 'one button' activation of 'unlimited' style variation switching (with fills) dept. Frankly, I'm shocked that Technics & Ketron don't support this. How about Roland & GEM? Roland & GEM arranger owners, please report.

Scott, maybe my reply is late, but I have read just now your question. Like AJ said, on the SD1 you can select the jump feature to automatically progress at each fill press from variation A to B then C, D and again A. Or you can simply manually select, after you press one of the fills button, the variation you like. It's not a big deal, really; it just takes a bit of practice (and knowledege of the different variations, of course). It's one of those little things that make playing an arranger different from playing a piano or a synth: it's an art of its own.

Hi Andrea: I agree that playing the arranger is definitely 'an art all its own'. My old Technics KN5000 worked similar to the Ketron method where you have to press 2 buttons to activate both the fill and then the new variation when going to a 'non' neighboring variation. I was able to manage (abeit with difficulty & some misfires) this on the KN5000, but after discovering HOW MUCH easier & more dependable it is to accomplish the same thing on the Yamaha arrangers, I don't think I want to go back to the old awkward method again. It's tricky enough to coordinate playing the keyboard in concert with having to do double duty pressing the other arranger functions (multipad buttons etc), so I prefer Yamaha's simpler more streamlined one button push approach to accomplish the SAME thing. Just my opinion of course.
