I love my Yamaha P120. As a jazz musician, I find the look and feel of the instrument to be very nice and sturdy. I think the P120 piano sound is about the best I've heard, and it has a nice Rhodes, Vibes, Clav and Harpsichord. The organ could be more punchy and the strings could vary in attack more, but for my purposes so far, it's been great. Now that I'm doing a few rock gigs, my only complaint is that it lacks a good brass sound to use for pop tunes. It's got an absolutely useless "Choir", but no brass. If I layer the jazz organ with the strings, I can get a faux brassy synthy sound, but I'd think a brass sound should be a standard for these types of boards who claim to offer gigging musicians the very essential basics.
So this brings me to the idea of a replacement. I don't want to buy a seperate synth just for my rock gigs. I'd like to sell my P120 and get something similar in size, look, and feel.
To get to my topic. Are the any of you dealers or players out there who can offer their opinions about the comparison in sound quality of the Korg SP500 pianos to the P120? Also I'd really hate to lose the very awesome Vibes that are on the P120. How are the vibes on the SP500?
Anyone know of another digital piano similar to the P120 that would have just a few more sounds like some brass and maybe a few basic synth pads or something? The only reason I am considering the SP500 as a replacement is because of the very basic arranger features which would be a nice bonus for rehearsing even though it lacks any customizing features. I noticed the Roland RD700 has an arpeggiator instead of an arranger. IMHO, without a sequencer, what good is an arpeggiator?
All this being said, I'm really mainly concerned with the sound comparison to my Yamaha P120 and simplicity of use like most digital pianos offer.
