Peter,

This is sounding more like a cakewalk problem than anything else. Download the trial version of Oneman Band, and see what it does. You sholdn't be getting those error messages, even if the driver was not functional. Something definitely wrong.

Good Luck,

Gary

I'm getting low on ideas now. I really thought we were getting somewhere when the 3k was indicating "data received"

I wouldn't like to make a call as to whether its a driver or cakewalk issue, but you could try the "deinstall the lot and start again" route, which I've just done on my "getting better but not finisherd yet" broken PC, with no problems.... other than the standard issue that using the MusicSOft Downloader" seems to set PSR3k playback volume to zero internally. Therefore I always turn the 3k off then on again after using this deeply uninspiring piece of software.

And does the "Musicsoft Downloader" work at all? If not then this points straight at the driver.

Does Cakewalk drive the internal PC synth OK?

In Cakewalk I only ever select a single midi output (because I only ever have one external sound device attached) so I would make sure that the "Midi Output" selected is Yamaha USB Out 0-1 when you want to send data to the 3k.

The midi input selection is irrelevant for playback.

Have fun (again)

I recently spoke to Yamaha and the "tech" was stumped too. I reinstalled Cakewalk, that didn't help. I tried OMB, couldn't get that to work. I updated my Bios on my motherboard. That didn't help.
When I open Cakewalk, in the Midi Devices window, the output would be correct. It would say: YAMAHA USB OUT 0-1 and, YAMAHA USB OUT 0-2. But the Input side would only say Maestro MPU-401, which I guess is the sound card in the laptop. So the Yamaha tech said highlight Maestro and see what happens. It worked!!!
The "tech" didn't know why. I am now able to use the 3K as my sound engine for playback purposes only which is all I care about. I don't intend to record on my laptop. So, now it's working and the only thing left to do is to reinstall Windows 98 or reformat my laptop which is not to bad because I don't have very much in it, I'll probably just leave it alone until I recuperate.

Peter
