I have no idea how they did it, but it looks like my SD1 has a totally new 'engine' and electronics in it.

The sound-quality is SOOO much better :
Bright, clear, no noise, huge/wide stereo image....... I'm must be the happiest man on earth now ?!
I have not seen/tested the new menu-options yet because of the overwhelming sound and styles.

Let me compare two brands (just for fun)

Ketron did the same thing in one year Technics did in 10 years (from KN1000 to KN7000) with 2 important differences :

1. Ketron used the same machine while T. used 5 (beta ?) types !

2. Ketron did it for free as a service for the customers while T. was asking thousands of US dollars for it.

We got a new machine !

Have to leave now.... I'm busy ! (playing/exploring my SD4000)

Roel,
Very cool, glad it's happening for you. Perhaps your upgrading experience would help others to upgrade as well.

Eventually the SD1's will have the new system. I've made 12 floppy disks at my store today and I've been contacting my local customers to come in if they don't want to download everything in their computers and I will install 4.0. I've already opened up my remaining inventory and replaced 3.2 with 4.0. Besides the improved sounds and styles the new functions added are giving the player so many of the features wished for over the past 2 years.
Being able to quickly turn off the accomp and only have drums and the voice you are playing is now provided. Being able to select only one of the 8 accomp. tracks and solo it with only drums is now provided (before you would have to mute each track one at a time).
The drum remix feature from the XD9 is now provided allowing you to play a midi file and while playing switch to any style in the keyboard to use as the drum track.
The bassist function has been added allowing you to quickly play left hand bass and change the styles chords using the right hand with it's voice also heard.
A huge improvement is that now, any patterns you wish to use in additon to the factory styles and flash ram styles can now be viewed and choosen in the same manner you choose factory and flash styles. Before, you had to go to a pattern list instead of by catagory and find the pattern you wanted to use and push load. Now, just select the pattern and at the beginning of the next measure the new pattern plays.
There are so many more new features but these are some of the ones I can remember right now. I had been using a beta version which had a lot of features not working and now that I've loaded in the finished version, everything is working great.

Yes,
the new OS works great; the sounds are better (the Grand Piano now is really stunning), the DSP is noise free and now you can access all the styles on the hard disk without having to scroll through them (pressing Block/List). I have a question though: they say that your old registrations would have been deleted, but this does not seem true: they are still there. Instead, I have tried to load a file called "Standard.reg" from the newly created Standard folder, but it doesn't seem to work. Are there any new registrations included with the new OS? Or am I doing something wrong?
Thanks.

Roel or Andrea,

Perhaps one or both of you could post a re record of a tune you did with the previous o/s and with the new one so we can hear the difference please.

Terry,
the sound now is no doubt cleaner; I think they improved a lot the DSP algorhytms, because the reverb now is much better. Maybe that's the reason why the acoustic piano now sounds so good. Other instruments -like the electric pianos and the guitars- have been totally resampled and now are more or less like the XD9/XD3. However, I have to say that a few sounds -like the Golden Trumpet or the Pop/Rock Tenor- have lost that "dirty" quality which made them so real.
Anyway, I guess that you are right and I'll have to record something...an example is always better than a thousand words...
:-)
