I noticed that most of PSR's DX piano are all the same. Did Yamaha used the same sample in all of their keyboards and module? If so, are they also present in the QY series? Are QY series have better sounds than the PSR or just the same.

Hi Dan,
The QYs I heard didn't seem to have sounds as good as the PSRs, but I haven't heard the latest generation.
I'll bet some of the guys who use the DX piano sounds more than I do can shed some light.

I don't know about the simalarities between the models, but Yamaha caught everyone's eyes and ears with that famous DX Electric piano sound almost twenty years ago, and they'd be crazy not to put it in everything they make. It would be like Tony Bennett in concert and NOT singing San Francisco. Won't happen. Yamaha would not be the contender it is today without the invention of the DX. It's what defined the sound of pop music throughout most of the eighties, and into the 90's. Personally .... I miss the choo choo sound too.

The choo-choo was great and never failed to amaze the audience. They aren't so easily amazed these days!

I do miss the Hyper-DX, and DX Modern patch.
I too have noticed that even the low end of the PSR k-boards have DX EP sounds, the upper ones (to my ears) just have better sound quality with a better touch responce.

Does anyone know any other brand of keyboards that actually make this DX-style electric piano sounds?

I know Roland has nothing in it's patch list that sounds like this. Korg has tried and attempted to sound similar, but I guess yamaha created the DX-7 sound so nobody can beat the original, but does anyone know of any k-boards models that have a good DX-style EP? I'm talking about the EP's in those Kenny G songs.

To be honest the only way to get a true DX sound is to buy a DX from ebay!.. They are up for sale all the time and at good prices. Also from what I've heard the Yamaha Motif has really brought back the classic DX sound with it's EP's....

Hi Sqeak

The ONLY way? Seems like a strong statement, with a DX plug-in board available for the Motif and 9000Pro SX1000 audio card and other hosts, with the new DX-based table-top module, and an FM7 software plug-in, etc. Have you had a chance to audition some of these alternatives?

Yeah I guess that statement may be a little strong. I've heard the FM7 and it's pretty damn close to the original, but I've also played the original DX series and in my opinion nothing beats the original. (that's just my opinion though) Also the FM7 sells in most places for $299.00 For the same price and sometimes less you can get an original DX7 from Ebay. I'm well aware of the plug in boards, and I've seen both good and bad reviews for them. As far as an alternative for the DX, I'd probably pick the FM7...

Yes, the DX7 was once a great a machine and some patches or voices may still be useable today (with the help of a decent efx processor) specially the remarkable Electric piano. I just sold my DX7s MKII a year ago for $500.00 to a friend and I kinda miss it's EP sound. I bought a PSR (GX27)intended just for my kids but it happened that I used it more than my kids use it. I already got three professional type of keyboards that I use for my gig from the 3 top brands; Korg, Yamaha, Roland. What I want is just a small module just like the QY70/100 just to compliment my existing gears with the DX EP. I can get a TX modules but those are big and heavy and occupies space.

Dan, I use to use a TX81Z for the LoTine EP.
