I'm having problems getting the PCMCIA slot on my new G70 to recognize my SM media cards and reader. I may have to buy a new PCMCIA adapter. If so, has anyone seen or used a PCMCIA to USB adapter? Could I then use a USB flash drive to store my info? I think that would be a valuable solution, if it works.

Cass, that could be a good solution. Hopefully it would work. I've been watching your posts about problems formatting the card. My G70 was delivered to my office today. It's still in the box, wont' be until later today until I get to it, but I did just buy a PCMCIA adapter for a compact flash card.

From the G70 manual..

Memory cards usable with the G-70
• The G-70 can use commercially available CompactFlash and SmartMedia memory cards. You can purchase such cards at a computer shop or digital camera dealer.
• Memory cards you purchase must meet the following conditions.
• Power supply voltage: 3,3V
• Capacity: 4, 8, 16, 32, 64, 128, 256, 512MB, 1GB, 2GB, 4GB (2GB and 4GB only with Microdrive)
• The G-70 cannot use cards of types other than the above.

Perhaps your card does not meet spec (too big, maybe?)

Diki, my SmartMedia cards are 8,32, 64 and 128mb. All are 3.3v NONE of them work with the G70. I can't find another PCMCIA nearby and may have to travel or order from the net.
I'm familiar with that paragraph in the manual, but I was asking if anyone had any experience or knowledge in the USB flash area.

Hi Cassp,
are they brand new?
I had similar problems with my dgx305.
I tried using smart media cards that had been formatted via a card reader in my pc.
The Dgx then couldn't format them .
Sorry can't help as far as the G70 goes.
best wishes
Rikki

Cass , download the G70 data base manager, and format with this software...see if the G70 will read after formatting on the RDBM..

I doubt your PCMCIA adapter is bad..

Did it work before Version3 installation?

I can send you {yousendit] a copy of my G70 card data..If you have a card reader on your PC, just copy the entire content to your card..It should work, if not ..maybe your adapter is bad...

Fran, where in the database mgr. do you format a media card? I'm pretty sure the adapter is working because the G70 recognizes there is something there, but cannot format it. I've exported my playlist thru the RDBM and tried all sizes of SM cards with no luck.

I haven't loaded ver 3 yet, I'm too busy trying to load a midi file from external memory !!!

Cass, I bought a PMCCIA adapter (Sandisk) at Staples the local office supply chain store and I got the 1 gig compact flash card(Lexar) at Walmart. No problem formatting.

Steve, so you got the G70 unpacked. What do you think? Exciting, isn't it. Yeah, I'll probably go out tomorrow and pick up a new adapter for Compact Flash tomorrow. I have a 32mg card from my VR760 and will try that first before getting something bigger.

GOT IT!! Haven't been able to stop playing it. Cass as you say it's a monster of a machine, it is! Key feel is great. 76 keys even better I feel very comfortable with the extra keys.

I had my wife listen A/B both the Tyros 2 and the G70. Her back was turned toward me so she could not see which I was playing I played 3 different tunes A/B ing them each time she picked the G70 as being "Richer Sounding"

The organs are fantastic......lots of terrific features on this board. I'm playing thru a set of Bose headphones now.......and really gettin' blown away with what's coming thru them VERY LIVE SOUND!!

It's gonna take some work to get the OS down and at this point I don't find it as user friendly as the Tyros2. Fran I'm sure as the days go on, I'll have questions for you.....More to follow..........now back to the board

Yes, either Hank B or Don Mason updated it when Hank owned the board.

AFAIK, there is no way to use USB flash drives...

All my experiences come from CF cards.. no problems there. But you may indeed have a faulty or outside spec PCMCIA adapter. We have many SM card users at roland-arranger.com that seem to be happy.

Whatever... If you can't beat 'em, join 'em. $13 at Best Buy got me a CF reader and I used my 32mg compact flash card. Everything formatted and ran as it should. Yeah!!!

I must have tried every possible way to load that SM card up - no go. Something's not right, so I'll lay them aside and go the CF route.

Steve - glad you like the G70. It just keeps getting better, believe me. Learn how to use those drawbars and the touch screen and you'll think you're at the controls of a B3, for sure.

I've got to learn how to use the One Touch feature better and maybe program my own sounds so that I know what to expect when I press a number.
