That's why I become nostalgic about a time when TRUE artists were just so above all the social crap that swirled around them at the time (and still does). I think social attitudes and dedication to the art were always a cut above in the jazz community, and that is why, even though I enjoy music and musicians from nearly every genre', Jazz will always be nearest and dearest to my heart. It's the people it attracts.
