This is a big day to most Italians, perhaps especially those of Sicilian ancestry, in honor of St. Joseph, the patron Saint of workers...
yes, bigger even than St. Pat's !!!

Even as a second generation Italian from New York, I never realized the significance of this day until I started dating my wife (I was still young, only 19 at the time ) ...Her Grandmother, whose name was Josephine had a SPECIAL dedication to the day and would literally set up an altar with St. Joseph's statue, flowers, candles, etc. The meal of the day was all St. Joe's: St. Joe's pasta (a special sauce made only on this day), St. Joe's bread (also special for the day, and OF COURSE St. Joe's PASTRY ... the famous ZEPPOLE !!! .... I used to bust Grandma by telling her that St. Joe never ate that stuff,.. except for the pastry of course ...
This morning I went to "da hill" as the Italian section is affectionately called here in Providence, RI, and bought zeppole for my staff ...

To our forum family in Italy: Is the holiday a big day over there?....

I was speaking to a fellow worker today at lunch who imigrated here about 25 years ago, but goes back 'home' to visit every year, and he was telling me it is a big day of celebration in Sicily ...

Being 3rd generation Italian, this one sort of escaped me. The grandparents are gone, the parents are gone, and there is no one left to carry the tradition's forward - sigh!

Yesterday I ate several Zeppole (my brother´s name is José). It´s a simple candy, but delicious.
