This is a big day to most Italians, perhaps especially those of Sicilian ancestry, in honor of St. Joseph, the patron Saint of workers...
yes, bigger even than St. Pat's !!!
Even as a second generation Italian from New York, I never realized the significance of this day until I started dating my wife (I was still young, only 19 at the time
) ...Her Grandmother, whose name was Josephine had a SPECIAL dedication to the day and would literally set up an altar with St. Joseph's statue, flowers, candles, etc. The meal of the day was all St. Joe's: St. Joe's pasta (a special sauce made only on this day), St. Joe's bread (also special for the day, and OF COURSE St. Joe's PASTRY ... the famous ZEPPOLE !!!
.... I used to bust Grandma by telling her that St. Joe never ate that stuff,.. except for the pastry of course
...
This morning I went to "da hill" as the Italian section is affectionately called here in Providence, RI, and bought zeppole for my staff ...
To our forum family in Italy: Is the holiday a big day over there?....
