Diki, I have performed outdoor jobs with the Bose L1 (PAS) at locations where people were scattered over an area more than twice the size of a football field. Never had to turn the volume to half in order to cover the venue. As for folks selling their Bose L1 systems, I only know of one of the approximately 20 individuals that I know personally that sold theirs. The others wouldn't part with them at any cost. The only reason Don is considering selling his is so he can update to a lighter weight base unit--not because he doesn't love the sound quality. BTW: The base unit weight 32 pounds--less than my Logitech subwoofer. The only problem both Don and I have is we're getting older and 32 pounds just seems heavier. Diki, maybe it's time you took the plunge and tried the system at no risk for 45 days. Then come back to us with YOUR appraisal of what the system can and cannot do. Do this with an open mind and use your keyboard, preamp, etc. I sincerely believe you and your audiences will like what you hear. Gary ------------------ Travlin' Easy

If you're under the impression that the Bose stytem is not loud enough, then you have serious hearing damage. A full, rich, efficient sound system that covers trhe largest rooms with clarity and presence is a joy for the performer, as well as the audience. Granted, some younger audiences, or some older ones with hearing damage may require that ear splitting, harsh sound that many PA's deliver, however, I have never had any client ask for more sound that I could not deliver.
I will admit, that for a 20 yr old crowd, doing lots of modern dance stuff, I may add an additional woofer, but I would still use the single Bose tower. The added, "in your face bass" is all that's required to make the L1 sound as raunchy and over bearing as the huge, heavy boxes on sticks.
Sure, it's all preference...but the proof is in the performance. I can do a living room cocktail party or a football field pep rally with the same, 10 minute setup, and still have room for 5 adults, with luggage, in my car.
Free speech ... freedom of choice. Give'em something worth remembering, and they'll come back. Some take longer to accept change than others. I saw the Bose, and fell hard in an instant. I "heard" it. and stayed down for the count !

For those of us that use the Bose PAS every day, phase cancellation has been a NON-ISSUE! I couldn't hear it, and no one I know of that uses the PAS regularly has ever said anything about phase cancellation. Keep in mind that Scott Yee highly recommends the Motion Sound KP-100 and KP-200, both of which I've found provide the worst sound of any amp I've ever owned. I have a KP-100 for a backup amp that rides in the van all the time--just in case of an emergency. Even after changing the speakers to those recommended by Scott, the KP-100 still sounds just plain awful. As I said earlier, Bose and Guitar Center, will both allow you to try the system risk free. Try it out. If you and your audiences don't like what you hear take it back for a full refund. Good luck on whatever system you decide upon, Gary ------------------ Travlin' Easy

Well, for one thing, I ALWAYS play stereo. That's what the keyboards are designed for, and most phase cancellation issues have more to do with collapsing less than perfect stereo samples to mono than the PA they are played through.
It is INCREDIBLY difficult to get a good stereo piano multi-sample to sound consistent when collapsed to mono. Not only do you have phase problems, but different phase problems for each and every sample in the set. Unfortunately, few arranger manufacturers (if any) provide a matching set of mono samples of their best piano sound, but force you to use inferior, older mono piano sounds. NOT what I bought the keyboard for, exactly!
And yes, unfortunately, I DO play at fairly high volumes to cover a large outdoors area (one of my house gigs), and certainly wouldn't want a PA that spread that volume around consistently! The only thing that keeps my ears from damage is that we set up BEHIND the PA, as do most conventional systems, and use lower volume monitors for ourselves.
I personally think for high volumes, having the PA be the monitors too is a huge disadvantage.
I have a friend that had a PAS system, it's not like I've never heard or used one.... And I thought for low to mid volumes, it was quite good, though a little lacking in the low to mid-low range (he only had one sub). Nice typical Bose clarity at the top, but not warm enough for me....
For the typical OMB, this might be just the ticket, but our main PA often has to deal with a full REAL band at close to concert levels, as well as my duo (and I do have a smaller rig for small parties, just use the JBL SRX top cabs from the main PA, a Mackie sub and small Yamaha self-powered mixer) so unfortunately, the PAS's just don't meet my needs. But they are cool....!
