When I get to grips with the Tyros I'd like to share some MP3 arrangements with you guys.
Does anyone know any good free website hosts
with a decent amount of space and FTP facilities, or does everyone pay up front for their own?

Ron

Ron,
I pay for mine. I had a free one over at Angelfire/Lycos...limited space, too many rules and they shut you down when they feel like it.

Mine's at www.homestead.com

Lycos is not bad, but they have cut the space in half from when I started. I will soon switch to a paid one.

I'm using Verisign, which owned by Newwork Solutions in Herndon, VA. The domain name cost me $35 a year, plus another $12 for linking to my website which 10 megs of space from my ISP is provided.

You may want to look into Value Web (1-800-346-1549. I understand they are fairly inexpensive and provide a huge amount of space for your site, plus lots of other features.

Cheers,

Gary

Ron,Are you a subscriber to Yahoo! groups?
If you are , you can then have your own "Briefcase" where you can upload up to 30MB.
I don't know how long this will last, but for me it's another place to load some MB's.
I have my own 'Briefcase' if you care to have a look.

I have mainly photos but also my first extremely amateur and shameless MP3. under Photos>music.

Hi, I've had 3 to 4 sites up in the past 5 years. I use http://abc-123.net. He's really good 12 bucks a month for 25mg's of space. plus no set up fee. also you can register your domain name for $40 for 2 years.

Best web host (In my opinion):
http://www.icestorm.com

they have several packages for different prices/sizes. I have the one with 600 MB storage for $24.95 a month. Yes, six hundred. This is why I have all the space to allow members of my yahoo group to put their mp3's.

I've moved my site -- http://psrtutorial.com -- to lunarpages and have been very happy with this provider. Initially, I had 15MB free from Prodigy. Lunar provides 300 MB for $7.95/month (if you purchase an annual contract.) I create my site pages locally (using NetObjects Fusion) and ftp the pages up to their server. They do not provide a lot of bells and whistles if you don't know how to create a web page, but they do offer a lot of useful utilites for those wishing to use them. I just launched a BBS for the site using the software provided and it is very impressive. If you check out the tutorial site link above, you'll find a link to lunarpages at the bottom of the home page. If you'd like to see their forum, check out http://psrtutorial.com/forum/

And there ad is right -- they do answer the phone! I recommend this group very highly.

I have been looking around for different hosting sites. Today I found one which seemed like a reasonable deal. I then read some reviews on the web about them. Try searching for the name of them with the word lousy or sucks. If you get pages of complaints back from the search engine that is probably a good indicator.

My site comes with my ISP and gives me 100MB of space and up to 5 e-mail addresses just for having them as an ISP.

I mostly don't like the pop-up ads or banners that are inserted in the "free" web sites. It might be worth paying for a site if that bothers you too.

I would suggest going to www.cnet.com and checking out what they say about web hosting.

Good luck in your search.

- Brian

Let me second MagicUser's suggestion. I was looking for CHEAP and was about to bite on some of those inexpensive sites. I then thought I'd just better to a global search and get some comments. You can find sites that rank different providers. The cheap sites I was looking for had terrible reviews. In fact, I wound up selecting Lunarpages because they were getting good reviews even though they were not that expensive. Some research is clearly in order before you send in your check.

Many thanks to Terry and Gary for trying out my Yahoo!Briefcase.
I have no idea why you get an "empty Folder" because I can get it without problem.
However, Chris of the other Forum has told me the same.
I am going to look into it today and find out why it's not working.
thanks again.
cheers

P.S.
I have just had a look back at the setting of my Briefcase and noticed that I had it set on "friends only"
I have now changed it to "public". Hopefully that has released the beast!
I would really appreciate it if someone could try it again now to see if it has cured the problem.
Thanks

Thanks for the web site info guys. I think to start with I'll try the Yahoo briefcase.
Eddie, your MP3 folder is still empty even though you changed it from "friends only".
I'm currently still looking at the sounds on my Tyros, but I aim to upload a tune or two soon.

Ron

I've discovered why you can't see Eddie's MP3 files in Yahoo Briefcase. You will not see any non picture files in the photos folder, so you need to add them to another folder other than that.

Cheers

Hi Ron
I appreciate your help here . I have taken your tip and created a seperate folder titled "Music" (this time with a capital 'M')
and uploaded my MP3 to it.
Would you be a real pal and see if it has worked please?
cheers

Eddie...
Your Music briefcase indicates there is one file in it...but when I opened it, it said there were no files present.

I am getting the same thing with my own MP3 briefcase and I have uploaded twice.

@Eddie in Florida

Thanks Eddie for your input.

I have wasted the best part of a day here trying to get this right. Funny thing is that *I* can see the file when I go to the site and I also can download the MP3 which I uploaded without any trouble!!!
It takes me about 20 minutes on my slow modem to upload and then download and right now my patience is out!!
If anyone else has an idea why this is happening, please speak up now

cheers

Eddie, this one really has me puzzled. The file folder says there is one item, but when I open the folder, it says the folder is empty.

With the photo album, it says there are two files, but only one photo is there. Apparently, there is something in the settings that you must do at your end to make this work, but I'm not sure what you must do.

Wish I could help, but I'm at a loss with this one.

Cheers,

Gary

Hi Gary,Eddie in Florida and others, re Yahoo!Briefcase.

I received this letter today from Will Stewart of the Yahoo song group, which explains why we have been tearing our hair out recently.:-
---->>
You can only give the public general access to your briefcase if you pay for the service. If you are using the free service you can only share with friends with a Yahoo identity which you have to insert for each file or folder (too much hassle for anymore than two or three). The way to bypass these settings is to send an email to an individual or group from your briefcase. But I don't think you can do that with your friends over in Synthzone as I believe you have to post messages from that site. I managed to download your mp3 at the weekend without any problems using the link in the email you sent. That is the only way you'll be able to use it unless you want to pay up.
<-----

I think that it is not a starter for me to pay . However , it seems that if I know the Yahoo ID of somenone who would like to hear the MP3's, I can let them in.
I would like to hear the MP3 of Eddie in Florida, so if Eddie can include my Yahoo ID in his set up I would be pleased. My Yahoo ID is plauderei2

cheers
Eddie Johnson
