There is something so utterly wrong with the concept of American Idol, and 'reality' shows in general, and we all talk around the cooler about the utterly contrived drivel disguised as a 'contest'.
The sad truth is, although many people will try to tell you why they watch it is for the next superstar, the REAL reason they are watching is for the humiliation of the poorer singers...... despite being mercilessly picked by the show's executives PRECISELY because they ARE so bad, and so gullible.
Now there is something fundamentally wrong with a society that gains enjoyment from watching (and even, with AI, of participating in) the humiliation and punishment of the innocent.
Take a look at the fate of other societies that had that little empathy..... The Romans and their circuses, little more than a gorier version of Survivor, the Germans of the 20s and 30s, with their 'schadenfreude', and the resultant rise (or at least concurrent rise) of Fascism.....
The fate of a society that derives pleasure from other's pain is decline and violence. Plenty of evidence for that, isn't there? Have to agree. If they were "honest" they would not show the humilition acts. It's like a fiction novel. The public is spoon feed what to believe in and what not to and goes along for the ride......Is it any wonder a guy without a record of achievement,experience, or sacrifice, who was an unknown to most of his voters just three years ago became President of the US? THAT was "American Idol" at it's best Americans seem to need "Idols" and instant manufactured dreams in all disciplines and disdain what is real,warts and all over that which is created spotfree.
