Hello All,

I was once an active keyboard player back in the late 80s early 90s. Now I want to get back into the scene and need you help on which keyboard to get.

I still have my Technics KN-2000, which I love because on its ease of use in creating new (custom)styles. That's mainly what I am looking for is something which sounds good and in which I can create new styles with ease. I borrowed the Korg-130 from a friend for a few weeks and found it to be too difficult to operate.
The kind of music I play, I would have to create my own styles and the on board styles are pretty useless for me. Thanks

I suggest the PSR-2000/2100... Both excelent keyboards, and will do a good job at creating styles. If you budget can afford one of these models this is what I suggest.

Hi
If create new styles, or modify old styles to have new ones, is something important for you, take a look to new keyboards from Technics: KN2600 and KN2400.
Some prefer Yamaha, some Technics, you know. Yamahas have a lot advantages, of course, but Technics usually are the best arrangers in sequencing, creating or modifiyng styles.

Technics users rave about the Technics ease of creating styles and recording. THis is not Yamahas strong suite. If you want to "create new styles with ease", I would suggest another Technics: like KN2400 or KN2600. You might also want to post in the Technics forum.

Thanks for the prompt reply.
As for the budget, I can go up to $2000, which will get me a PA-80. But it intimidates me just by the looks of it.

$2000 would cover you to purchase either a PSR2100 or KN2600. You need to judge both for yourself, but try creating a style with both keyboards. If you are going to use a computer to create styles, then you could consider both keyboards IMO.

How do you use a computer to create styles? And what is IMO? Pardon my ignorance but I am entering the scene after maybe nine years.
Where can I buy a Technics keyboard in the US. I have been trying to search the web but no Technics info. Lots of Yamaha info though!
I do love my kn-2000 and I had the PSR-90 rrior to that but I would need to feel both to decide.

There are so many good styles available on the web right now that I wouldn't even consider creating new ones. As for the keyboard, I sincerely believe the Yamaha 2100 is the way to go, but it depends on what you wish to do. I sincerely believe that yamaha voices are far superior to those of most other manufacturers. If I were in the market for another new board, which would likely cause my untimely demise, I would spend several days trying as many keyboards as I could access. Sit down, play them yourself, and look at every feature--then and only then can you make the judgement. Everyone on this forum has their own personal likes and dislikes when it comes to keyboards. Asking us which make and model we prefer is almost like flipping a coin. NAH! Flipping a coin only gives you two choices to select from.

Good Luck,

Gary

Florida should have "many" Technics dealers IMO "In My Opinion". I would look in the Yellow Pages for the nearest independent Musical Instrument Store. Something like "Piano Warehouse", etc. (I am not sure Piano Warehouse is in Florida though). They are in California and possibly other states.

Let your fingers do the walking and I am sure you will be able to find a Technics dealer in your vicinity or fairly close by.

Best regards,
Mike

PS: The nice thing about the Technics KN2600 is its ability to incorporate 'Audio' files by way of Secure Digital Cards, ie., SD Media Cards. It would give you "tons" more storage space than the PSR 2000/2100 has. Plus you can store other media on it too, like Midi Files, Style Files, etc. You will most likely pay several hundred dollars more for the KN2600 though. For sounds, I would tell you unequivocally to get the PSR 2000 or 2100. The KN2600 has many good sounds though and you can tweak them to your hearts content. But there are several Organ sounds that sound weak or 'thin' IMO and WOULD require editing. But right out of the box the PSR 2000/2100 has absolutely fantastic sounds (NOTE: You cannot edit the sounds near as much as the KN2600's though). And the Volume output from the speakers is far superior imo than that of the Technics KN2600. But I would encourage you to play 'both', then decide.

I hope this helps.

Thanks a lot to all you guys for some really good info. I stopped at the Guitar Center on my way back from work and checked out the PSR-2100. I really liked the sounds but the over all feel was a little cheap. But thats not really important to me right now. I just saw the 2000 on ebay for $899 brand new. Is it worth for me to spend the extra $300? Remember this is my first keyboard in over 10 years.
Thank you all

There are some differences between the PSR-2000 and PSR-2100, however, they are not significant. Additionally, all of the new styles are available at www.psrtutorial.com. There are a few new voices as well, but again, there are so many great voices in the 2000 that IMO I don't believe they are worth another $300. If I were in your shoes, I would go with the 2000--the price is right.
