OK genius: are you ready?

"Ah Jamaica": very nice reggae beat; the guitar is a bit confused, maybe it's the reverb. The song fragment is too short. Did you record the drums yourself? Very nice. Could use a bit more harmonic variety...OK, forget about it, YOU are the genius after all...

"Latin lovers" (thank you for dedicating a song to us...): promising start, lot of movement. Nice counterpoint and nice rhytm too. The third guitar disturbs a little the effect. Very good overall.

"African violet": very good start. The percussion is the best part, but the guitar should come in later; for this kind of rhytm maybe an electric guitar sound would be better. The percussions are very good and the sound quality is excellent too. I have a feeling that this song would be better without that much guitar. Just percussions and bass and only later a bit of electric guitar. Terry, you have a career ahead of you as a percussionist!

"Floatin on a breeze": nice harp sound in the background. Finally an electric guitar! Doesn't give much the impression of floating on a breeze, though. The beat is too heavy. You don't sound as inspired as in the other songs here.

"Rococco and rum": nice drums. Again too much guitar. Would be better with just drums and vibes and only a few guitar notes. Remember what Miles Davis once said: if I stay silent for 32 bars then, when I play a note, it has a much greater effect!

OK Terry, I'll send you the phone bill...

Andrea,
Very good points all. Thanks big time for the input....We need to figure a way to pipe DSL to your house.

BTW...I started in life as a percussionist drums and vibes. When I got back from Nam, it was the folk heyday, so I picked up guitar. The last band I played in a Latin Jazz band, I played vibes.

Terry,
All tunes I thought were very cool. I liked the guitar placement and the acoustics. Also, I liked the fact that the guitars weren't in my face, which in my opinion is what made Floatin on a Breeze kind of work well.

Andrea, Take a listen again as I did, and see if you don't hear it a little differently.
Lou

Lou,
of course there is a difference, but I am trying to be as spontaneous as I can and so am giving my first impressions. In fact, when you buy a record you have never heard before, usually is the first impression what counts.
Hey Terry, I hope there will be a special discount for your Synthzone friends...

Lou,
Thanks for the words and I think you got what I was trying to get across with "Floatin'". The picture I had in my mind while writing the tune was an eagle, wings spread floating on a breeze, then catching a gust of wind (the electric distorted sound)and then just floating again.

Andrea,
About first impressions.....I both agree and disagree for myself. My first listen to something usually tells me if I am interested at all in the work, but then I need to listen to it at least a couple of more times to understand what the composer was trying to do and whether or not I like it.

I did this just the other day with a cd by David Gray. I love his tune "Babylon" so I bought the cd. First listen I was disappointed with all but that cut, however another couple of listens and I like the cd. Babylon is still the best cut, but the rest isn't bad either.
thanks for the input guys, I appreciate it,
Terry
