With the influx of new retirees to Florida, the music-scape is changing a bit. Old standards are still requested, but not as frequently. Mega hits of Fats, Dion, Ray Charles et al are getting great responses. Lately, Mustang Sally, Midnight Hour and Ain't Too Proud to Beg have been showing up on the back of napkins submitted by audiences. I am currently looking for suggestions along the line of 5 satins (In The Still of the Night), Dion (Run Around Sue), Frankie Ford (Sea Cruise)to add to my repertoire. Pre-recording background vocals on the Nomad Jukebox have opened up another entertainment dimension at the parties I play. Doing any Doo Wop? Let me know.

Eddie,

A definite showstopper for me was always "It's All In The Game". Also, "The End of the World" by Skeeter Davis, done 50's style.

When I was with the band in NYC, the sax player (who was a jazz guy and HATED RnR even as a teen in the 50's) thought I knew a thousand of these tunes .... it was really more like just 900 ...
Earth Angel
Sillhouettes
Tears on My Pillow
You Belong to Me (See the pyramids along the Nile.... etc.)
16 Candles

Little Star
Venus
Diana
Dream Lover

The Wanderer
Rockin Robin
Come Go With Me
ALL the Bill Haley/Chuck Berry stuff

Under the Boardwalk
A Rose in Spanish Harlem
Save the Last Dance for Me
.. and the hits just keep a comin' ....

Thanks Gary...
I do most of those...and that is the kind of music the new seniors are responding to.
This latest little project has me interested in songs that have doo-wop vocal backups. Sometimes I get people out of the audience to be my backup group...but you can imagine how that goes. My pre-recorded doo-wops at least give them something to follow.

Eddie, do you use a vocalizer? If so you can do some neat improv stuff with that, particularly when singing In The Still of The Night by the Five Satins. Its just a matter of kicking it in and out with the foot switch when harmony is needed. It also works grea with some of the Beach Boy songs.

The only drawback with the pre-recorded back-up vocals is timing and the inability to be able to extend the length of the song. I tried this once and could never quite make it work the way I wanted.

Good Luck,

Gary

Mustang Sally, Chuck Berry stuff... you mean those old-timers are asking for what our parents called "the devil's music"!?! Aren't you glad we won't be around when they're calling for some of those good old Hip-Hop tunes?

On the other hand, if done properly, the result will always sound better - more realistic.

Leon, the flip side of "Donna" was "LaBamba", a real challange if you're not Spanish, but a crowd pleaser that works well in a medly with "Twist & Shout" and "Hang On Sloopy" (a favorite here in Ohio)

Eddie, any "best of" list from the Temptations or 4 Tops will bring up several Doo Wop biggies.
