I find the "internal recording method" making a Midi file and loading on to the sequencer via floppy is far too good to ignore. It sure simplifies the recording process. Going directly from the KB to the sequencer via MIDI is not impossible but far more "cumbersome" and time cosumming; and yes, you do have the problem of the "real time system information" not being delivered as it should, all causing confusion and waste of time. I stick with the KB "internal" recording method. I don't even have a MIDI out cable conected from The KB to the PC.
Playback from Cakewalk or Cubase to the KB is usually not a problem.
