Rory, what an interesting, oddball project. Arrangements like this take time, and after inclusion of minor passing chords, inversions, altering the lead line to fit, etc., there "ain't much" of the original left.

Still, a unique project that shows your musicianship, understanding of bossa rythems and changes and recording expertise to good advantage.

Always enjoy your work/projects.

thanks guys.

Actually, I altered the lead line very little. The main thing that makes it sound so different is that I just used the same melody in a different key. I'm singing the melody as though the song were in the key of D, but playing chords in E minor. So it makes a bunch of minor ninth and eleventh chords that creates this interesting texture. I did alter the melody very slightly in the B section, but the verses melody really hasn't changed.

Honestly, I think my version sounds more lonesome and forelorn than the original, with its peppy arrangement. It is an oddball project to be sure.

I'm working on another oddball project too. A gypsy jazz version of the cantina song from star wars. anybody here do gypsy jazz style violin? I can't do it, but a violin would be cool in the starwars arrangement.

That's a very nice bossanova rendition of this tune and it somewhat reminds me the style of Matt Bianco.

There is a brazilian project called "3nabossa" that I like a lot. They produced 5 CDs; one of them is dedicated to bossanova versions of american jazz standards. Excellent! Their website: http://www.3nabossa.com.br/ . There's a YouTube clip here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jGWkkzj-524 .

Fantastic arrangement, great concept, great execution!

THIS is why I love music! No rules. no boundaries.... You want to do a tune this way? No problem... If you've got any more of this kind of innovative re-invention and re-harmonization, I would LOVE to hear more of it. Truly inspiring!

Do you use an arranger at all, Rory? It would be interesting to hear how well this could be pulled off 'live'...
