Hi OldNewb,

You can add Lyrics to a MIDI File by using a FREE Utility Tool named PSRUTI designed by Heiko Plate.

Step-1:

Download and install the latest version 7.8 of PSRUTI from here.

Step-2:

Let us assume you are trying to insert the Lyrics of the song Silent Night into your MIDI
file of the same song.

Open NotePad on your PC and type in the following text file. Save this ASCII Text File as LYRICS.TXT

Be sure to give this file a .TXT extension.

LYRICS.TXT
----------------------------------------------
Lyrics to Silent Night Add a descriptive line of text

[start lyriclist] Do not change this line
Silent night
Ho-ly night
All is clam
All is bright
Round you Virgin
Mother and Child
Ho-ly infant so
tender and mild
Sleep in Heav-enly
peace
Sleep in Heav-enly
peace
[end list] Do not change this line!

-----------------------------------------------

Note: You must remember not to change these two tags:

[start lyriclist]

[end list]

The PSRUTI program looks for these two tags. You can place any text within these two tags and the program will read them in as Lyrics to your Song.

Step-3:

Now comes the question of learning to use this software program.

If you read through the help file psruti_eng.pdf it will tell you all about it. It does a lot!
You are only interested in learning how to insert Lyrics to a MIDI file. So I will explain just this part.

Step-4:

When you launch the PSRUTI program you will see a button named Source File (.mid) at the top left.

Press this button and select you MIDI file SilentNight.mid
This is your Standard MIDI file with no lyrics.
Press the Play button on the bottom

You will see another black screen with the words -SilentNight
Press the Play button on the bottom of the screen

You will see the Chord Progression but no lyrics.

Step-5:

Press the Record button with the Red Circle
This will open up the file navigator.
Select Lyrics.txt

You are telling the program to read in the Lyrics from the text file named Lyrics.txt

The Record Button should now show a Yellow Circle with the first word Silent displayed in the box

Press the green Play button

The music will start.
Hit the Enter Key on your keyboard when the melody catches up to the first word - Silent
Hit the Enter Key again when it is time for - Night

Keep on hitting the Enter Key in time with the music playing in the background.

Now you must save your work!

When the music stops, Press the [Take It] button
This saves your work.

Quantize to the quarter note and press [OK]

Step-6:

Review your work

Press the [Play] button and watch the Lyrics come up on the screen.
If it does not look quite right, press the Record Button with the Red Circle and start all over.

Step-7:

Press the [Exit] button to go back to the main screen.

Step-8:

Press the [Save As] button on the top right of the screen.
Save this new file as SilentNight+Lyrics.mid

Step-9:

Play this SilentNight+Lyrics.mid file on your sequencer like Sonar or through your Arranger like Tyros2.
You should see the Lyrics show up.
