Hi all,I play a psr2100,
What inversion on left hand chords do you play a Emin7 chord?
I learned playing in full chords using the ancher method which helps to get to my next chord with ease, but depending on how the keyboard reads the inversion I sometimes get a G6 instead of a Emin7 and im not sure if I should be playing a G6 to substitute for a Emin7.
This goes for many other chords also. When playing an arranger keyboard do we need to play many of the chords by holding down the root note to the lowest?

Regards,
Daz

I am not sure about Emin7, but there are some chords that have to be played in root position. If I play notes G,A and D my PSR550 says it's a G major.. It is not. If I play D,G,A it correctly says it is a Dsus. This is, IMO, a Yamaha bug. My Roland EM correctly identified the chord, and interestingly the Casio WK3500 identifies this correctly as well. You might have to play some chords in root position so that it is played correctly.

Daz,

I'm not a reader, but here's a good place to look http://psrtutorial.com/Resources/R_ChordSecrets/w05_inversions.html

Daz,
I tried the Emin7 last night on my PSR550 in 1st inversion (where I would prefer to play it) and it identified it as a G6. To play an Emin7 I had to play it in root position (yes, root note at the bottom). You don't have to play it in root position on arranger keyboards. You have to play it in root position on YAMAHA arranger keyboards.
To be fair to Yamaha though, G,B,D,E is G6 in root position. I'm not sure what you would have to do on other arranger keyboards to play a G6. Maybe Yamaha is correct and all the others are wrong!!! But, Minor7th chords are more prevalent then 6's.

Hi again,
On my last keyboard before I had a Yam I played a Emin7 using G,D,E in that order and it was recognised as a Emin7,but now I have no choice but to play E,G,B,D.
When I first started playing keyboards with Kenneth Baker books the Emin7 chord was shown to use in order G,B,D,E which is a G6, so why are we taught to play a G6 to substitute for a Emin7?

Daz

Daz,
The notes for Emin7 and G6 are exactly the same as you know. It doesn't matter what position you play the chords, they are still Emin7 or G6. What would make it one or the other would be the Bass player (if he played the G note it wud be a G6). On a piano the root note in your left hand identifies a G or E, on an organ the root note played with your foot. Kenneth Baker suggests the 1st inversion because it has the least finger movement to reach other chords (this would be my preferred position as well). This does not mean he taught it wrong. Since the logic in a Yamaha keyboard cannot know if you meant to play an Emin7 or G6 it assumes a G6 (since it has a G note on the bottom). I won't have access to my Roland keyboard manual till the weekend so I don't know how other keyboard mfgs interpret a G6. I suspect they aren't able to play this chord. I suspect that on my Roland ANY postion of E,G,B,D would be an Emin7. Maybe someone else, who is familiar with other keyboards, can chime in.

Actually all the arrangers will read this chord differently based on the root[including Roland]..There is no other way for it to distinguish the chord since they are identical notes...

My i30 keyboard says em7 for all of the following:
D E G
E G D
G D E

Is this wrong?

Boo, you have to add the 4th note..G,B,D,E[6th]..In this chord your i30 will read a G6 chord in other inversions it will read Em7.
