I'm scheduled to perform at a funeral this coming Saturday. I was asked to perform: 'Red Sails in the Sunset', but to change the words a little to make it more appropiate to the occasion.

The original lyrics:

Red sails in the sunset
Way out on the sea
Plese carry my loved one
Home safely for me

He sailed at the dawning
All day I've been blue
Red sails in the sunset
I'm trusting in you

Swift wings you must borrow
Make straight for the shore
We marry tomorrow
And he goes sailing no more

Red sails in the sunset
Way out on the sea
Oh carry my loved one
Home safely to me

My proposed altered lyrics for the funeral:

Red sails in the sunset
Way out on the sea
Plese carry our loved one
Home safely for me

He sailed at the dawning
All day we've been blue
Red sails in the sunset
We're trusting in you

Swift wings you must borrow
Make straight for the shore
In heaven tomorrow
Then he'll be sailing no more

Red sails in the sunset
Way out on the sea
Please carry our loved one
Home safely to sea

Interested in hearing what you guys think of these altered lyrics. Feedback & suggestions appreciated.

Thanks. - Scott

I just received a very good suggestion via private email (from George A) to
Change the last line to:

Home safely to THEE.

Thanks George.

The Biggest Funeral song today is......

Andrea Bocelli's

"Time To Say GoodBye"

I agree that 'Con Te Partiro' is the most often requested & performed song for funerals today. Though it's certainly a beautiful tune, it (to me) has reached an 'over saturation' point, so I'm glad I was asked to perform 'Red Sails' instead, especially knowing it was one of the favorite songs of the person who died. I plan on using an acoustic new age type arranger style when performing it. - Scott

I can't get over the terrific support on this forum. I just received a private email from Synthzone member Dan Hanson, who shared what I think may be the MOST fittingly appropriate lyric to 'Red Sails In the Sunset' for funerals. Many thanks to Dan for his moving contribution. - Scott

Red sails in the sunset
Way out on the sea
That carried my loved one
Home safely to thee

He sailed at the dawning
Now what will I do
Red sails in the sun-set
He’s sailing to you

Swift wings He did borrow
He’s now on that shore
I’ll see him tomorrow
We’ll go sailing once more

Red sails in the sun-set
Way out on the sea
I know that my loved one’s
Home safely with thee

What a coincidence. My wife just played Red Sails in the Sunset at a funeral at our church. It was the deceased lady's favorite song. Was played as a processional as the family came in. If this thread had come a few days earlier, I could have asked the family if they wanted Red Sails with the new words as a vocal solo. I assume it would be OK if I sent the words to the family as a remembrance?

RJMiller: No problem, a wonderful idea. I think sending the bereaved family these revised lyrics will provide added comfort, as well as act as a fitting remembrance of your wife's performance at the funeral. I'm certain Dan Hanson concurs. - Scott
