Anybody here can recommend a good spyware/adware killer besides Spybot? Free and not free? My computer has been infected with this weird spyware that has disabled me from checking my hotmail from home.

Thanks guys

Spybot should do the job. I've been using it and it works well, but has to be run manually on a regular or frequent basis.

On top of ADSL-firewall(router), software-firewall and Norton ......

I use them all : Adaware, spybot and Window-washer (WebRoot)

to prevent trouble comes in and get rid of unwanted stuff.

The system is clean (as far as I know ) and runs for more than a year now, without problems.

In addition to Spybot and AdAware I also run WinPatrol which has a free version at www.WinPatrol.com but you have to have a clean machine when you install it because it works differently than the others. What it does is to take a snapshot of your system at the time you install it and then it alerts you anytime something tries to write to your registry and asks you if you want to let that happen. So far it has alerted me several times when some malware wants to install something.

I have both Ad-Aware and Spybot loaded in my laptop. Both work wonderfully. I alternate between programs to hopefully catch anything that might escape the other. I use them about once every two weeks or more often when there are serious virus alerts.

Hm...I downloaded adaware...right after the software found all the bugs/viruses, I was ready to do the clean up then it asked me to purchase the software. Nice marketing tool.

I think I removed it all...PLUS I have a friend who's much more computer savvy than I am, he's been helping me clean the registry up also. For some reason it's not working.

It's a pretty new computer too. About a year old.

Aah...1 1/2 hours of cleaning..cleaning..cleaning...my computer is finally CURED!! Yippee!

Man you guys don't know how happy I am about this.

I cleaned using the adware...first time it didn't do it, I retried and this time I remember to actually restart the computer before opening the internet explorer (where the problem was). It was OK!!

My comp runs faster too!

Thanks guys for all your help!!!

Got to say guys, be carefull of the spyware stuff.. As one who makes thier living on this... I've seen a rash of this latley and in most cases a backup and fresh re-load were the only cure... It's getting worse...
DJ
P.s: If you do a re-load, Vshield for virus and zone alarm for the firewall.. And do not say yes to any pop-up!!!

Here's what I use, all programs completely free.

Spybot S&D
Spyware Blaster
Hijack This!
CWShredder
AVG antivirus free edition

Hijack This! has probably saved my butt so many times in the past. Recently I was attacked by some kind of spyware that actually hid ALL my spyware removal programs. It probably took me about 4 days just to finally get everything out. And it also would close IE out on me at random times. Then again it was pointless to even surf because it wouldn't let me leave the homepage that it put on IE.

After that I switched to Mozilla Firefox because I felt that IE was too vulnerable, which is true, most spyware seems to always look for IE and take it over.

Be careful, there's Ad-Aware and Adware. NOT the same programs. If i remember correctly, Adware 'encourages' you to buy the program when you try to use the FREE download. I use Ad-Aware and Spybot - both are good.
