Just received Keyboard Mag in the mail today..Interesting article about Vista and should we change to it if we pay our bills via music..Another article is about Linux..I have been using Linux on the Media Station, and I am going to install it on one of my back up computers..It seems to me to be a very good OS to use in the music business..I hope everyone gets to read the two articles I mentioned..

Any comments from anyone..? I think it could be an interesting topic..

The writer says don't let buying a new computer bother you just because it has Vista...Vista will be better because of some better steaming capabilities...but there are not a lot of driver support yet...If you rely on music as an income...stay with XP for a while..Paraphrased..

GREAT topic fran, and imho well overdue on this forum...for me, the linux discussion is the more important....i have been thinking of changing to linux for a while now, but there does seem to be a distinct lack of decent sequencing programs, vis-a-vis sonar/cubase/logic et al..and none of these companies are porting their programs to linux...do you know of any new programs that would match these in quality?
or can anyone else share their experience with using linux and the available audio/midi editing software?

Wine is a program for Linux that allows you to run a lot of Windows programs; (Including sequencers like Cubase) if you pop over to this site http://www.winehq.org/ you will get all the details including an application compatibility list.
Don’t expect to use Native Linux like Windows, as although it looks the same you need to have a lot more knowledge to get the best out of it. (The reason the Mediastaion runs pretty smoothly on it, is because of the amount of hours and work put in by Dominic and other Mediastation Engineers)
The Golden rule is, unless you want to get your hands dirty, or really hate Windows, don’t bother with Linux.
If after the above you still want to try Linux, make sure you install it on separate partitions, and have your computer as a Dual Boot system.

thanks fran and bill, i will check those out...and bill yes i am getting tired of windows, and from what i have been reading vista is just gonna be a whole lot more P.I.T.A. whereas everything i read about linux is the opposite(forgetting install and getting drivers issues)..far less in the way of viruses, much more stable system and lots more...and to be honest i get tired of having to have a dual boot pc, so that my DAW partition doesn't get trashed by some internet nasties...anyhow thanks again for the tips on software...btw any tips for which linux distro to use?

Your biggest problem with Linux is the hoops you have to jump through to get most of the VSTi's running smoothly, Some do, some don't. YMMV. Plus, if you use hardware accelerators (UAD, TC Powercore) you may have a VERY hard time integrating those.

Linux shows a lot of promise, but unless the industry as a whole embraces it, you are going to have to get lucky AND geeky to use it as easily as you can use OSX or WinXP

yes diki, i have read about that in other forums..its the main reason i haven't made the jump as yet, but vista is making it very tempting!!!

i remember the time when win xp was released. for about six months there were alot of applications which would not work with xp, drivers were few and unstable, etc.
give vista about the same six months and slowly you'll see how 75-80% of users will build their DAW on it.
and of course there will be many staying with xp, for a while, as i know people (very few!) who are still using win 2000.

things are changing. i am curious how will windows look and work in ten years time...
and i am waiting to see how real 3D interface will work... (holograms and stuff... with sequencers and softsynths.
