Very sad, but I'm not surprised considering. I'll never forget the shock I experienced seeing him holding up his baby next to the hungry crocodile. - Scott
A very sad story, he leaves behind a young family. Ironically, it seems to have been a freak accident, if the stingray had struck his arm and not his chest at the heart he no doubt would have survived. RIP
Very sad indeed, I heard about this on the news this morning. With all his work with crocodiles and snakes you'd never imagine a stingray would do this.
a quintessential aussie...he did us proud and he will be missed...was very very passionate about protecting wildlife at home and around the world and in protecting our borders from imported pests, plants and animals....people here are at a loss for words as to the how...i for one thought if it ever happened it would be with a croc, or shark or snake, not this way....just goes to show, if it's your time it is..no matter how healthy/unhealthy fit/unfit you are, or whether you are a good citizen/bad citizen.. dennis

Well yeah I guess it really doesn't belong here. But I really can't complain about this sort of OT posting. We have many other postings that don't have so much meaning as this. Steve Irwin played such an important role in protecting wildlife I have no problem talking about what a loss it is losing someone like this.
Personally I am very sorry to see Steve pass on but he leaves a great legacy which will continue to help wildlife on this planet for many years. He made me proud to be an Australian.

I find the global attention to this unfortunate accident, and the outpouring of sentiment rather amazing ... I had no idea he was as popular as this ... t.

This tragedy will continue to be all over the news on radio, papers and TV here in Australia for some time to come. Such is the great affection and regard that Steve has deservedly held in this country (and all around the world).
Most people seem to share the feeling that they have lost a close friend even though most never had the priviliege of meeting him in person.
The world will be poorer for the loss of such a great man.
