Very sad, but I'm not surprised considering. I'll never forget the shock I experienced seeing him holding up his baby next to the hungry crocodile. - Scott

A very sad story, he leaves behind a young family. Ironically, it seems to have been a freak accident, if the stingray had struck his arm and not his chest at the heart he no doubt would have survived. RIP

Very sad indeed, I heard about this on the news this morning. With all his work with crocodiles and snakes you'd never imagine a stingray would do this.

a quintessential aussie...he did us proud and he will be missed...was very very passionate about protecting wildlife at home and around the world and in protecting our borders from imported pests, plants and animals....people here are at a loss for words as to the how...i for one thought if it ever happened it would be with a croc, or shark or snake, not this way....just goes to show, if it's your time it is..no matter how healthy/unhealthy fit/unfit you are, or whether you are a good citizen/bad citizen..

Hi,
he was just a larger than life character.
Couldn't quite beleive it when hubby told me yesterday afternoon. So incredibly sad.

best wishes

The world has lost a great man. I admired his passionate love for all creation.

Here is a slide show celebrating Steve's life. He will be missed by everyone that cares about the environment as he did so much for animals.

Australia's tribute to Steve Irwin.
People gather outside his zoo, in Queensland.
