Donny & the G70:

Ok Donny, what's the verdict?! Did you bring this baby home with you today? Is your Tyros2 on Ebay yet?

Donny, how do you compare the G70 with Tyros2? Which one fits YOUR needs better?

1) How did the actual instrument voices sound? Which were your fav and least fav? Did any of them sound 'overly bathed' in reverb, as was reported (even with OS2) by some other people (including myself) here.

2) How did the STYLES (in comparison with Tyros2's) sound? Which one's were standouts & which (if any) sounded lackluster?

3) I only assume you appreciated the terrific 76 note keyfeel as much as I did. How do you rate the G70's Color LCD screen viewability (brightness & sharpness) compared to Tyros2? Do you think screen(fixed or tiltable?) visability & clarity good for outdoor daylight gigs? This is one drawbar with T2 I'm not happy with, at least (on T2) we have the option of a widely tiltable LARGE color screen to help with this.

Ok Donny: looking forward a full candidly honest G70 report from you.

Scott

PS: Thanks for sending me the (above) pic of you playing the G70 today.

I really enjoyed the Grand X piano which sounded superb & the modeling organs B3 were simply AWESOME...Vtrp shake was super expressive also....The growl sax & expressive also & tenors sound so authentic....there was so many sounds Scott I cant remember all of them but over all I was very pleased.....access to them and 4 OTS is at your fingertips....another nice feautre is the is a PIANO & ORGAN button which instantly turns you keyboard to FULL Piano or Organ instantly. Setting up 3 up layers & 2 low is a breeze also. Into/Ending flexability is far superior also.

Did any of them sound 'overly bathed' in re verb, as was reported (even with OS2) by some other people (including myself) here.

A few sounds had too much reverb as a default but not many as I went thru the pallet and styles.....but being the G70 is so easy to navigate one touch of a button brought up the sound mix screen and with just one touch on the REVERB sound in question to highlight and then just easily use the corresponding DRAWBAR to adjust the REV level to your liking form 0-127 super easy then just save it to a performance & your done. When I played the G70 I couldn't understand what people were talking about regarding this issue?

2) How did the STYLES (in comparison with Tyros2's) sound? Which one's were standouts & which (if any) sounded lackluster?

None are bad on either KB being they have so many in so many genres.......you can always convert either format for use in either unit too if needed.....to my ears the G70 has a more live in your face sound also the styles are so editable & the COVER TOOL is so very kool also....you can change the flavor of the style with the touch of the screen instantly something the T2 cannot do to create a total new instrumentation in real time to Rock, Pop, Ethnic Acoustic etc ...plus you have the "D" beam which I love to insert extra sound EFX just by waving your hand over the beam!!

3) I only assume you appreciated the terrific 76 note key-feel as much as I did.

Scott honestly I loved the G70 key-feel, key size and the 76 keys really let me run my fingers up & down the KB.....after playing G70 all day & then performing last night with the T2 I realized the need for 76 keys for me .

How do you rate the G70's Color LCD screen view ability (brightness & sharpness) compared to Tyros2?

G70 screen was colorful & fully editable regarding colors, & brightness....to me it was very bright, clear and there were no silly icons.

Do you think screen(fixed or tiltable?) visability & clarity good for outdoor daylight gigs? This is one drawbar with T2 I'm not happy with, at least (on T2) we have the option of a widely tiltable LARGE color screen to help with this.

Scott although the G70 doesn't lift up like a T2 its not a factor for me at all as it was in so many other units Ive played thru the years eg: 9k, 2k, 3k, pa 80,60, SD1, X1 I play outdoors, indoors, etc etc I just deal with it tilt or no tilt..plus my laptop is on the upper tier on my Apex stand which covers the display so I never life the T2 screen anyway....no need to.I personally think the T2 screen is flimsy and at some point will be suspect to damage & wear.

Ok Donny: looking forward a full candidly honest G70 report from you.

Scott I playd the G70 for about 3hours yesterday....it opened my eyes as an arranger player/singer to so many features that really make me love this unit....I was glad I had the opportunity to try one ...
Lets put it this way ....I was so impressed I'll pick up my G70 Tuesday night Nuff Said & much more to come after I get into it.

Scott

Scott you asked? ...I tried to answer you best I can with the little knowledge I had with my G70 experience yesterday....but it was enough to continue and go for it.
If you take the time you can achieve success with most any of the top arrangers out there.

Donny: I suppose you think the Ketron Midjay and Tyros2 don't qualify among the MOST now, right?

Good luck with the G70. Let us know in 2 months if the G70 has been eliminated from your MOST list as well. I have this funny feeling that you'll be (sooner than later) trading in the G70 for the E80, and then who knows . . .

Either way, I wish you the very best with your music. You are very talented.

Scott

"When I fall in love, it will be for ever"

Given the number of keyboards Donny gets through, I hope this Nat King Cole song isn't in his repertoire. Yikes!

Donny, congrats on the G-70. From all I've heard, I'm very anxious to try one out myelf. Yours is not the first reference to the G70 being more "in your face" or "live-sounding" compared with the Tyros. The same has been said of the Ketrons.

How then, would you compare the G70 sounds, patterns and drums, with those of the SD1/Midjay? Looking forward to hearing your G70 sometime soon. Have fun.

Glenn

honestly the minute I played & heard my first style I thought of the SD-1 in your face live sound.....it made me smile
I will surly give you more opinions as I progress after I start gigging with it next week on stage.

It's all cool, Donny - I was just joshing ya. It's a great song, one of the all-time classics and I knew it'd be on your list.

My board is still my old trusty i30 which I've come to know and love but hang on to for mainly financial reasons. Have fun with that G70!

That plus those Roland B3 voices certainly has me interested. Anyone know where I find one around the Cleveland area? (Jim P?) Gotta check this board out for sure.

Glenn there is not a second mic input, but there are stereo inputs for additional gear, that could include a laptop, mixer etc.

Also there is a volume control on the G70, always available for change.
