I've downloaded and started using Winamp, which seems to be an excellent program for organizing and playing MP3 files. What's the best way to convert CDs to MP3s and vice versa?

Thanks,
Glenn

HI Glenn,

I use ACID PRO..larn more: http://www.sonicfoundry.com/products/newshowproduct.asp?PID=704

Excellent program to make mp3's from Cd's and much much more, change tempo, keys, chain songs, mix and match parts etc. Well worth the bucks.

Glenn,
For converting mp3 to playable cd's on your stereo etc, you can use several different programs. I use Acid to convert my wav.s to mp3 for my site.

However for mps > playable and also mp>wav or cddr cd's you can use:
Adaptec cd creator....www.roxio.com
musicmatch jukebox
siren jukebox
data becker
on and on. Most will have a downloadable trial and or a free version that is not as complete.

Not to mention there is freeware also.
jam on,
Terry

Yes, I've input songs from the Boss BR-8 (recorded as .Zip disk files) into my computer as MP3 files (via Roxio Platinum Easy CD Creator) and then pulled them back out onto musical CDs to hand out as samples of my stuff, using the same Roxio program.

Winamp can also convert MP3 to WAV file ready for burning to CD as well as playing them as audio. Just right click on the top of the Winamp panel, select Options -> Preferences -> Output and double click on the OUT DISK driver. It will bring up a browse window so you can select where you want the WAV files to be stored. Then simply close the Preferences window and now when you play an MP3 it will be converted to a WAV file on your drive (you won't hear it). Of course Roxio Easy CD makes the conversion process completely transparent. But many Winamp users don't realize it has this capability.

Can Winamp or Easy CD go the other direction... that is, CD -> MP3? Isn't that what they call "ripping"?

No, Winamp doesn't have MP3 output. Apps like Real Player will convert CD tracks to MP3s and can be downloaded from Real.com And yes, CD ripping software to create the WAV files is another option. But you will still need to convert these to MP3 format yourself.

I just learned that I can do all necessary conversions between CD, wave, and MP3 files in an older version of Easy CD Creator, which I already have on my laptop. Converting a wave from your sequencer to an MP3 prompts another question:

When creating MP3s for live performance backing tracks, what recording rate should be used? Several choices are given from 32 -> 320 kbps.

Thanks,
Glenn

Agreed 128 is top quality, you can go more but it makes the file much larger
