I have had chance to play around on the Karma and I think it is an awesome machine, very clever technology, you can knock out something what sounds very good in seconds, currently own a fully expanded Triton but would love a Karma also because it is really so creative.

I think those demos are pretty good. This synth seems to be killer for dance, and techno. It also seems like a great synth for composing film scores. There was a nice demo showing this capability. I'm not too fond of the red color, but underneath, this is a powerhouse. Still not too sure about this Karma thing though...???

I've listened to all the mp3s on the korg site. Listening to them again as I type this. I agree... awesome.

The screendate2 demo knocks me out with the sound progam switching going on in the background accomp line. All that data can go to MIDI out, and to the sequencer, if I understand the product info.
WOW! Instant automatic hocketing (tossing a melody line between two or more different instruments), in real-time!

Karma documentation says over 1000 GEs onboard. Did you notice if these are handled in the same way as program patches, by bank/number/name?

I'm a big fan of S. Kay. Phenomenal electronic arranger/composer.

Found his website.

I make techno and am looking for my first real synth. So far, I've done a bit of amature loop-based work. I've picked out my sampler, a Yamaha A3000, and I was all set to get a Waldorf Microwave XT, and/or an Access Virus b. Three days ago, I saw and played the Karma. I was instantly entranced, but I can't help but wonder how versatile it will be. If I buy it, it will be my only synth for quite a while. Having the sampler will keep me in interesting sounds for a while, too.

But, I need some advice on whether or not the Karma would be a good first synth. My main style is dance/techno/trance, but I'm looking to expand into ambient, industrial, experimental, and noise, too.

Thanks so much!

Hi BuzzTheta

I do not see any problem with versatility. Its a Triton, takes the MOSS option and two 16MB ROM cards. The Generated Effects onboard are versatile and can be combined in groups of up to four. Others will be made available and there will be a programming environment made available, I think for the Mac. I cannot think what would be more versatile outside of a computer-based system.

I should add that I have spent a lot of time with the Karma and the manuals since I purchased it Feb 28.

My understanding is that the programs and combis are the same as on the Triton. However, a generated effect or effects are associated with each program and combi. So you call the generated effect by calling the program it is associated with.

Eminems bust out album was programmed on a Triton and a moog.

Dr.Dre and Snoop have one at their beck and call.

Combined with that Yamaha sampler, the Karma will be a very, very powerful tool.

The programming will be Mac only? How much will that hamper me if I use a PC?

Programming can be done on the Karma Keyboard. Presumably, the Mac version will have a better interface and fewer parameters that cannot be edited. There is plenty of editing to do on the Karma Keyboard without even editing the Generated Effects themselves.

Updates. Vic83, who started this thread got a Karma. Apparently, the plan is to also have a PC version of the GE editing software.
