Anyone ever have to replace the floppy drive on a PSR? My PSR-740 won't load anything from disks anymore. Also, is the Floppy Drive light supposed to be lit constantly when a disk is in the drive?

Replacing the drive is relatively easy, however, you must be careful when replacing the top of the keyboard and make sure the flat, ribbon cable that goes to the drive is positioned exactly where it was orriginally. It has a crazy fold in the cable so it can make the right-angle turn to the back of the disk drive.

The drive itself is a standard, high-density floppy drive that can be purchased in any computer store for about $15 to $20. It's held in place with four screws, using the same type of mounting bracket that's used in a computer. You will have to remove the small cover from the front of the drive, which is held in place with two, self-taping screws from the outside. This gives you access to the two front screws that anchor the drive. The two back screws can only be accessed by removing the top of the keyboard. This means you'll have to remove about 20 screws from the base of the keyboard, then carefully lift it open from the front.

As for the keyboard's light, it should remain on at all times when the keyboard is turned on. The only time the light flickers is when a file is being loaded.

I would only add one thing to Gary's post.
This was a tip given my an old gentleman at my local store. Those 20 screws that Gary mentioned are not the same lenth, & easy to loose! Note: Loosen a screw, don't take it out of the hole, then put a piece of
Scotch Tape over the hole, It will keep the right screw in the right hole, & you won't loose them!

Nice one Nobby! An alternative is to get a piece of cardboard and screw the screws through it in the same pattern as they came out. I use the same trick for cylinder head bolts....

Another Tip:
Whenever putting a screw back into a hole in plastic, be sure to engage it into the original threads that the screw first cut. If you don't, you run a risk of ending up with a completely stripped set of threads.
The easiest way to find the original thread is to turn the screw backwards while holding light downward pressure until you feel the "click" of the screw dropping into the old thread.

Just thought I let you know I was able to install the new Floppy Drive today-piece of cake. Thanks for the help. It took me about 10 minutes-5 minutes to unscrew everything, and open the case up, and 5 minutes to install the drive and screw it all back together again. I'm back in business!

Thats great....good info just in case we have to do it ourselves. What brand/model did you replace it with/cost?

I used a Sony MPF920-Z Drive at $24.99 at CompUSA. I paid a little extra to get interchangeable faceplates which I used the black one. If you need to replace the floppy drive make sure the new drive's power connector is located in the opposite corner of the data connector (for PSR-740). On the Sony drive the power connector was in the center of the drive which made for a tight squeeze because there is a part of the case that dropped down right where the cable needed to go. I was able to squeeze the connection together but it almost didn't make it.

Just make sure you torque each screw to 140 foot pounds.

Just put the screws in snug--they're selt tapping and strip easily.

Well, I ordered the 2100 because I think my floppy drive problem is not with the drive itself, but the keyboard. Check this out-I can record and play back midi files on the floppy drive, but my drive will not format blank disks, or read the Yamaha disk, or load styles. I have given up on fixing it. Why would the 740 be able to read, and playback midi files, but not be able to load syle files, or format blank disks?

After installing the new drive, did you try a master reset. I had to do that with one that I put in last year. After the master reset, everything worked just fine. If this does not solve the problem, there could be something wrong with the OS, which is bad news.
