I'm really excited about the new Yamaha Tyros, and it may even end up being my next arranger kb purchase, but with the trend of manufacters making things (including KBs) smaller, sleeker, and lighter, I'm curious why Yamaha designed the Tyros with all that extra real estate both to the right of the keys (was incorporating a built in floppy diskette holder really necessary?), as well as to the left of the keys (the mod wheels certainly don't need that much space around them do they?). Is the Tyros' length (nearly 45 inches) really necessary, perhaps to provide adequate space for internal components, or is its length & depth (nearly 17 inches) just a waste of real estate making its overall dimensions larger than necessary? One of the reasons I like my PSR2000 keyboard so much is that its size (and weight) have been kept to a minimum with no appreciable empty space to the left, right, or above of the key bed. As a one man gigging KB musician, size and weight matter. The Tyros' larger size won't deter me from purchasing it as it certainly is lightweight (only weighs 27 lbs
), but I'm still curious if it could have been designed to be a little smaller, yet still have included all it's terrific features. Interested in hearing other people's thoughts on this.
