Are the styles the same? Is the chord recognition the same?
Is the QY100 just a 2000 without the keyboard (the guts of a 2000)?
I'm evaluating (30 day from GC)the QY now. I have basically turned my own keyboard into a arranger. How would you compare these two products. The QY is about 1/2 the price of a 2000 (new). I only place this thread into this forum because now my keyboard (with the QY100) IS a virtual arranger. I trigger the QY from my keyboard and it recognises the changes. Why would I want to spend more to go to a PSR2K? (devil's advocate Q... but I don't know if I should keep this thing as a serious playout instrument or take it back and look to a full arranger/keyboard)
Pro's; Con's??

Hi BossX: I can't speak for the QY100, but I own the QY70, and though it supports chord recognition and some basic arranger button functions, but it really is no comparison to the PSR2000 in both sounds, styles, and features. I think the live and cool sounds on the PSR2000 (ported over from the PSR9000/9000pro) are a stand out. My QY does not include these sounds. The Qy portables also don't support the One Touch, Multipad, and Registration Memory Bank features, which I think is 'essential' in producing a dynamic LIVE sounding keyboard performance.

Still, the QY100 is a fantasticly powerful little box with very good sounds & styles. It's sequencer supports 480ppq (impressive), though it was recently discoverd that the PSR2000 supports 1920 ppq (incredible). If all you require are the basic arranger functions, then travel light with the QY100/QY70 and a keyboard controler. I take mine on a vacation with me and it comes in handy for those impromptu performances & jam sessions.

The sounds in the QY100 are all XG sounds, so you loose the great quality "panel" voices in the PSR keyboards. Also, you can only play 3 finger chords if you want to use a midi controller to play auto accomp. The good thing about the QY100 over the QY100 is the addition of a foot pedal option so you can move from variation to variation (2) or you can use it for starting and stoping the styles. The QY100 also has a mic or guitar input and a seperate effex processor for this input. As for the styles, there are less jazz, latin and ballads than on the PSR keyboards. Primarily, this product has more rock, techno and more modern styles. There are over 4,000 phrases from which to make up the 8 tracks of the styles and you can program your own tracks from scratch if you like.

I believe the QY styles are incompatible with PSR styles. Can anyone confirm or disconfirm this?

Let me see if I understand this right... You can control the QY100 with an external keyboard? I was interested in the QY100 and actually considered buying one until I talked to a sales rep at musicians friend who told me the QY100 could not be controlled by an external keyboard and that all funtions in terms of playing and recording have to be done on the unit by itself? Was he wrong in telling me this?

Clif, the QY-styles are not compatible with the PSR and vice verca.

sqeak_D, you can perfectly well control the QY-100 with a keyboard (arranger and realtime parts) and with a footcontrol you can swith between the variations and fills etc.

So you loose all the "sweet", "cool" and "live" voices?

Is there any other "box" available that has these sounds available ???

Yamaha does not make a module of PSR sounds or styles. They have the QY products, but these feature only XG sounds and different pattern tracks. They now offer their Motif in a dance oriented box and the Motif does offer a few of the "sweet" voices such as flute and trumpet, but I wouldn't think most arranger musicians would run out and spend the $1600.00 or so dollars for the desk top Motif just to get a few extra sounds.
I wish Yamaha would make a module like Generalmusic has the WK2aranger and Solton has the X4. The industry has never done very well with module sales here in the US as compared to keyboards when it comes to arranger keyboards, and this is a big reason why you don't see to many. I've had many conversations with Yamaha and Roland product developers on this topic.

I agree George. But not only a "rack" arranger would be welcome, I like the "sweet" voices but do not like Yammie styles. Do i realy have to buy a PSR1000/2000 and set it on its side next to my amp, just to get the voices?

Worst thing about qy100 is battery life - about half an hour for six aa batteries!
Comes without a power adapter as standard here in u.k. otherwise its a handy tool.
