Then again, I must admit... I'm a bit confused with all this Mars stuff. I was under the impression that we did all this before a few years ago with another rover.

Yes, we sent a rover before, unfurtunatly it did not have the capabilities to take samples or test anything. All of that stuf was on the lander. So this time they made much larger rovers and placed a ton of testing equepment on them. Also the first rover failed fairly quickly, giving us limited info. These new guys will give us more info than we will be able to digest for quite some time.

This time we have alot of cool gear to find water bearing minerals like hematite. Where there is water there may have been life. The next few months will definetly be interesting, even if we dont find life there.
