Whats your budget?

If all else fails get an Shure SM58 as a reliable robust workhorse but there's a lot of other mic's out there at a similar cost that sound better to some - like I'm using an AKG "tripower" model (the number escapes me) which cost me 50 pounds sterling and to my ears sounds better than a 58.

You have to audition, preferably with your own PA. Audition without any effects or compression; your own voice through a PA may sound frightening without assistance but its the only way!

I think you're going to get a lot of replies on this one...

George: I (personally) like & use the ElectroVoice EV 767 for stage work because it has a real hot signal & it seems to compliment my vocal range (baritone-tenor). For stage work, I recommend a good quality dynamic mic. I like condenser mics because they capture more clarity & detail, but are not really rugged enough to endure the stage (rough handling & occasional drops). Condenser mics are better suited for studio/recording work. Other than that, mics are a highly personal choice because one may bring out the best qualities of one person's voice yet highlight the worst qualities of someone else's voice. No two people's voices (timbre) are the same, so you need to audition and compare different mics to find out the best one for YOU and the particular style of music you sing. Checkout Electrovice, Sennheiser, Audix, Shure, AKG etc. Happy mic hunting.

Hi MacAllcock & Scott,

Thank you for your replies. We already have SM58s. Our budget is from 100-300 USD. If we can get a really good microphone we are willing to spend upto 400USD.

Thank you again.

Hi George

If you want a real top model, I'm using a Shure Beta 87A. Our singer of the band uses a Beta 87 wireless.
Hey it's a littlebit expensive but what you get is upperclass.
There is only one restriction:
You need phantom power at your mixer or you'll have to buy a special convertor if you don't have + 48 Volt at your mixer.

I also use the Shure Beta 87. It is a condenser mic, but rugged enough that it has lasted 12 years for me. I also have a Shure Beta Green condenser mic. I think it's the 4.0. It is quite close to the 87 but at about half the price.
My backup and guest mics are Behringer. Very similar to SM58, but only $30 apiece.
They are probably the best music bargain I've ever seen.

Hi George,

check out the AKG 1000S. It's around $200 and has a great clean sound for both: Studio and Live sound.

George,

May I suggest AKG C3000? It is for $300 and is intended to be for the studio and for the stage.

AKG C3000 is a cardoid condenser mic (will require phantom power: 48V).

..okay.... I'm just a simple guy, using an old AKG that STILL sounds great (the mic, not necessarily me), through a Peavey head ... what is this 'phantom power you're talking about?!? ...

As great as the AKG C3000 sounds, from my own personal experience (I own one), I don't recommend it for stage use. Though it can be used on stage, it isn't really that road rugged. I dropped mine on stage (just once) and . . . . . . . glad I carried my EV767 as a backup.
