Hello guys,

My local music store is selling the PLG150-DR for Yamaha synths for a real dirt-cheap price. I'm considering one for my 9000Pro.

But I heard that getting the card to work for the styles is impossible. I know that my 9000Pro transmits MIDI channel 10 for drums (in styles), and I heard that the PLG150DR can be used for channel 10.

Now if I can hook up a MIDI cable by itself on the 9000Pro's "out" and "in", then it would play back the PLG150DR's drums when you use styles wouldn't it???

Would anyone care to try if this might work? I'm really searching for more drum sounds than the stock 9000Pro sounds that I can use during styles playback.

The Pro, I'm looking at your direction for an answer...

Thanks,
Sunny

For a very detailed answer, do a search in this forum for PLG150-DR and you'll see my documentation on this subject.

The short answer:
1. Do not plug the 9000 Pro's MIDI Out to the In - that won't work and could cause some damage.
2. The PLG150-DR will never work with styles as you already know.
3. The PLG150-DR will work with ordinary midi files if you use one of your right-hand voices to select the card and assign it to channel 10, but you give up one of you R-voices in the process.
4. If you really want to get into some SysEx commands and placing them into the front of all of your MIDI files, it is possible for the midi file to select the PLG150-DR and assign it to MIDI channel 10 without assigning it to an R-voice. I got this to work but it wasn't easy and I didn't want to convert my hundreds of files in this manner so I eventually gave up and removed the card from my 9000 Pro to allow me to put a more useful card in it's place.

I really like the PLG150-DR drum sounds and think they are superior to the 9000 Pro's drums, but in live use it's not enough of a difference to be worth the effort IMHO. So I put my PLG150-DR in my Motif ES 8 for the studio. If you'd like to see how much of a difference there is between the 9000 Pro's drum and the PLG150-DR, my comparison webpage is still online:

What a pity, I won't be using it for MIDI files, just wanted it to work for drum styles.

I'd better spend my hard earned money on something that will actually work.

Sherpa, look around the internet for online stores compare and find one with the best price. If you look around hard enough using the search engine then I'm sure u'd find a good deal soon.

The Pro, I tried several times to place the MIDI correct MIDI data that launch the sounds of the PLG150-DR, could you please share the way you controled this card with your 9000pro? I will appreciate a lot.

By the way, thanks puzk for your answer. I will try to find the right store.

Cheers

Sherpa

This is the answer - again, note that by searching this forum you can find all of my entries related to the PLG150-DR and the 9000 Pro. I don't recommend using the DR card with the 9kPro - it's complicated and not worth the work required IMHO. I have nothing further to add so this will be my last post on this topic.
