Hello,

I recently got my Nady speaker cab and a behringer mixer. Total cost 146 dollars with warrantys. Then Im going to need a amp, nothing Ive found is cheap enough for me and will work. So Im going to send it all back and get this http://www.musiciansfriend.com/srs7/g=home/search/detail/base_pid/603092/ It is larger, and has 3 extra tweeters. It however is only 200 watt, 100 less than the nady, but should be all that I need. The amp is built in, so Im good on that. I will miss my mixer though, that thing was sweet! Is GEM an alright brand?

So am I doing the right choice and getting this instead? The ratings scare me, but if it is bad I can always return it again. And of course ill get the extended warranty.

Thanks,

Phil

do not buy GEM(can't use it or sell in professionally)(the money will just go down),nady, kustom, even behringer(with some exceptions) in general.this is my advice again.(for band PA)

first of all know this-rule of thumb-
"BUYING THE WRONG PA COULD BE ONE OF THE MOST EXPENSIVE MISTAKES OF YOUR LIFE."

dont buy nady or kustom.they simply are (mostly) crap.

I also recommand Alesis 6 ch mixer(79$)which has efx.so no cables,seperate efx box,less set up time.under 150$ you'll have more options.

the better option than stand alone KB amps is
mixer with EFX and power speakers.that's the way to go.pwr speaker becomes your monitor when you update your system.

cheap,reasonable sound,heavy,loud for price- http://www.musiciansfriend.com/srs7/g=live/search/detail/base_pid/600596/

and better and lighter http://www.zzounds.com/item--PEVPR110P http://www.zzounds.com/item--PEVPR112P http://www.zzounds.com/item--PEVPR115P

if your bdj is 350 t0 500$ http://www.carvin.com/products/single.php?ItemNumber=P410-805&CID=SYS1 - now 350$,has titanium drivers, mixer has both ch and graphic EQ,
beat the hell out of custom/nady which are mostly piezo crap(esply the cheap ones) http://www.carvin.com/products/single.php?ItemNumber=P620-805&CID=SYS1 http://www.carvin.com/products/single.php?ItemNumber=P620-1230&CID=SYS1

if you want louder,cheaper
pwr mixer+speaker route like this http://www.musiciansfriend.com/srs7/g=live/search/detail/base_pid/631250/ http://www.musiciansfriend.com/srs7/g=live/search/detail/base_pid/601372/ http://www.musiciansfriend.com/srs7/g=live/search/detail/base_pid/601374/

but if you really want to have a good sound for the price, portable, great resale value and industry standard for medium grade live sound
have a mixer with efx and http://www.musiciansfriend.com/srs7/g=live/search/detail/base_pid/600202/
and louder and more expensive http://www.zzounds.com/item--JBLEON15G2

or cheap ,but heavy for watt/weight ratio http://www.zzounds.com/item--JBLEON15P

go to wanted to buy and sell forum.UD is selling them for 250$ I think.good price.

if you have more http://www.musiciansbuy.com/live_sound_speaker_cabinets_yorkville_yorkville_elit e_powered.html

the list goes on.

better ,after returning subscribe here and ask questions. http://acapella.harmony-central.com/foru...918a&forumid=33

I don't know a thing about the GEM speakers but those three tweeters look like piezo units to me. These sound quite good at low volume but can get harsh and "squawky" when pushed so audition first at high volume.

Hey guys,

Thanks for the replys, they all sound like great options, and would love to get them, however i am poor, and cant afford anythign about 250 dollars.

Dave, does the used samson come with one or two speakers? If it does ill probably go with that, thats stretching it even as it is.

Mike, shipping is pre paid from Musicians freind for returns. So i owe nothing.

Quick Q whats Wrms? I found a speaker and it says "Amplifier’s Output Power: 175 Wrms... or Watts RMS" Does that mean it has a built in amp?

RMS is the constant power available from the amp, so YES, it has an amp built in.
Some amps use a "peak" rating, but no one ever uses a (mixer)amp at full tilt, so peak ratings are useless - rms is the real world power you can expect.

Great! Thanks for the info, much appreciated. Im sorry Dave, but I think im going to pass on the Samson, im sure somebody else would love to take it off your hands though.

Just to double check, the wrms is the power the cabs amp puts out? So i wont need to buy another amp unless i need more wattage?

Watts RMSis the only number that counts, both for Amplifiers and Speaker systems.

"Peak" or "Music" rms figures are usually at least twice as high as RMS (sometimes more) and can usually be re-interpreted as "meaningless".

Another trick for speakers is to quote the total "music" power for a pair - so a pair of speakers quoted at "1000 Watts" might turn out to be 250 Watts RMS.

For truly meaningless figures, look at the specifications of some of the computer "Multimedia" systems. I've seen a pair of 5 Watt RMS speakers advertised as "200W Peak". mmm.

You can also get some very optimistic figures for speakers aimed at the Car market. My local spares palace sell "300W" 10 inch "car stereo" speakers. Judging by the magnet size they are about 80W RMS on a good day.

another thing to consider is watts rms at what percent total harmonic distortion.
A guitar amp might be 50 watts @5%THD, A good stero amp is, lets say 100 watts @ .01% THD. A way to boost the ratings is to take the 100w@.01%THD and call it 300 watts and not tell you that it is 300w@2%THD. The numbers are made up just to give you an example, the lower the THD the cleaner the amp is and the more useable power.

Watts RMS can apply to amps or to speakers. If an amp is described as '50 watts RMS' it refers to the power of the amp. If a speaker is described as '50 watts RMS' it refers to the power the speaker is designed to accept. If a set of powered speakers is described as '50 watts RMS' it refers to both the amp and speakers.

Whether or not the amp is separate from the speakers is found elsewhere.

That doesn't sound like a powered speaker.
