After all the hoopla and cudos and comparisons to the Tyros, I finally got a chance to spend a few minutes with a 2100. It was nowhere near a Tyros in sound, style, arrangements, etc. I have a 2000 and wouldn't even think of moving up to a 2100 now - even the store owner agreed with me. There's certainly nothing new I need there. So for anyone thinking of purchasing a Yamaha PSR 2100, it's a great machine, but it's not a major step up from the 2000. If there is a 2000 available, save the bucks. IMHO.

Cassp,
I thought you already knew that! The only advantage is a few more voices and twice the memory of the 2000. Not a big deal, and no reason to upgrade. Now the 3000 may be a different story. I hope to check one out as soon as they come to my neighborhood.

Cheers,

Gary

My position is precisely yours. I have a 2k; whilst I can see that the Tyros is seriously good I can't justify that level of expenditure. The 2.1k is not so much better than the 2k that it is worth me upgrading.

I am still wondering about getting one of those HDM units for my 2k, but now the 3k is in the pipeline the position is different, especially if it is (as suspected) a USB Host which (I also suspect) would allow the use of "pendrive" USB devices for portable storage.

Although Yamaha discourages purchases of competitors keyboards by building interest in an unreleased upgrade, I think they are also hurting their own sales. Many musicians will put off buying a PSR2100 until they demo the PSR3000.

But why would an owner of a 2k want to upgrade to a 2100? The sonic incentives are not there. I don't buy new keyboards every year, so I like to do my research and check for the best price for me. The 2100 is a definite improvement over the 2000, don't get me wrong, but as an owner of the 2k, the 2100 doesn't represent a good reason to switch boards.

Yamaha would have and would, in the future, be better off if it kept a board on the market for a longer period and offered software and minor hardware upgrades. I might buy a HD or similar memory upgrade. I certainly would have considered the sounds upgrade too. But I wouldn't go through the hassle of selling a good 2k just to purchase a 2100.

I sincerely believe the worst part of upgrading, especially for performers, is the learning curve and applying all of the old technology to the new keyboard. For example, when I upgraded from a PSR-500 to a 5700, I had to go through each and every style, then place those style, tempo, transpose and voice settings at the top of the page of every lyrics sheet. That procedure took months. When I switched to the 740, the same procedure was again repeated, but in addition, the same information was also placed in registration memory slots to make access faster. The process was again repeated when I upgraded to the 2000, and this time the information was placed in several MFD files and registration memory slots. The last upgrade made life easier, when I switched from those 15-pound books to a laptop and instant access to files. Again, at the top of each page is the keyboard settings for the 2000. While I keep telling my loving spouse this is the last upgrade, I know full well that there may be a PSR-3000 in my future. OK, so maybe I'll be able to get the lead singer job with the Vienna Boys Choir when she's finished with me, but if it happens, that will be my last upgrade.

This was posted by someone who has owned more than a dozen keyboards over the past 20 years.

Happy Holidays,

Gary

I remember getting a 3-manual Yamaha organ in the early 80's and thinking it was the absolute ultimate, and I'd never have to buy anything else. That was about 20 keyboards ago.
I changed from 2000 to 2100, mainly because I could still get good value for the 2K and it cost very little to change. There are some definite advantages, but probably not enough to spend over a couple of hundred dollars difference. Tax deduction will take care of that.

Hey guys, I thought I'd just chime in...just to let you know my 2100 is still on the table for $950. If that sounds attractive to you, give me a holler.

...and while I'm shamelessly promoting sales of my keyboards...I also have a VA7 ready to go at $900...pretty good prices for 2 great keyboards.
