I agree,
Who listens and analyzes the lyrics to songs? I have no clue what the lyrics mean to my favorite song, Oye Como Va:
Oye Como Va
Mi ritmo
Beuno pa'gozar
Mulata.

I agree with you guys- Just sometimes I see what the "mainstream" media is classifying as "cool" or "acceptable" can be totally way off. People like us who are immersed in music (professionally and non-pro) can see that the reviewer doesn't know what he's talking about.

What a load of bollocks. Anything-for-a-byline stuff . . . 'fluff' writing by 'fluff' gerbilists, er, journalists, probably Enquirer rejects.

The most telling, and obnoxious, phrase is in the first sentence where it refers to 'CD collection' with its blind ignorance of live music and its automatic assumption that only dj's exist on the wedding circuit.

Stuff 'em, I say.

From experience, here are ten songs that don't go over well as the very first song introducing the newly weds to the dance floor:

1. The Bitch Is Back
2. You're a Bad Dog Babie
3. Too Fat Polka (If bride is overweight)
4. Get Back (to where you once belonged)
5. The Adams Family Theme
6. One Has My Name the Other Has My Heart
7. 50 Ways to Leave Your Lover
8. Under My Thumb
9. Elephant Walk (if one of them is overweight)
10. Me and Mrs. Jones (If Bride's new name is Jones).

None of these songs have gone over well. When I've played these songs, I have been physically evicted from the wedding. At least I kept the deposit.

hi Larry: I think song selection has EVERYTHNG to do with the wishes and desires of the client and the mood they want their wedding party to have. I always discuss with the bride & groom before the gig, both what type of music they want played, as well as take requests for specific songs. Depending on their personality and sense of humor, some of the above listed songs have actually gone over well on a few of my wedding party gigs, especially later in the evening after everyone's smashed. Our job as entertainer/musician is to gauge the audience to know what song material is appropriate for each unique given situation. - Scott

I've been playing an uptempo version
Barry Whites "Love Theme" since day one of its release in the 70's for wedding party intros...Followed by the wedding song selected by the couple......
Works every time!

I played a wedding a while ago and the suggestion was made not to play "Your Cheatin' Heart", "Please Release Me", and other similar ones. This really suprized me because many years ago in a dance band we played mostly weddings and almost always played these "uppers" as they were quite popular then.

One of my favorites then was "She insulted my apartment, so I knocked her flat".

(Not really, I wonder how many of the younger generation got that one?)

Whilst I agree with some of the song analysis they don't alter our position. The average crowd may have the musical taste and appreciation of a fruit bat but they our still OUR audience.

We almost always do Unchained Melody - and if we don't you can bet it gets requested. Similarly "Everything I Do....".

I sometime feel that critics feel unable to praise anything mainstream. Having seen both "Harry Potter" films and found them more than acceptable entertainment, I remember one critic saying "The films produced by Chris Columbus therefore I won't like it".

On the wedding theme I was at one do where the DJ had less brains than that fruit bat. As ever, no-one will dance until the bride and groom have had the first dance - but the DJ neither played anything suitable nor asked them onto the floor. In exasperation I reminded the DJ, who rushed over to the couple who were deep in conversation.

The question was to the bride - "what's your favourite tune - and can you start the dancing."

The answer "Janet Jackson - What Have YOu Done For Me Lately"
