Hi

Having received my Roland E80 today after P/Xing my Korg PA800 I must say I love the new board. Personally, I find the E80 far easier to work with than the PA800.

My question: Can I load midifiles from a USB flashdrive directly into the E80 using the USB port on the keyboard? If so, how would I achieve this?

Thanks to all for any answers.

You can't... (simple answer)

The E80 (and all Roland arrangers) only operate as USB slaves, NOT masters.

This means, to transfer files into an E80, you either have to hook to a computer or laptop, or load the data into a card, and then transfer from the card into the E80's memory disk, or leave the card in and work directly from that.

Yes you can, into internal memory, but better yet..get a pc card[external memory]..
All you need to do is connect the USB cable to the E80 and PC..Go into menu and select USB..there you make the connection to either internal or external..

Copy SMF's to the folder that says "put new songs here"...like wise you can add styles to "put new styles here"..

Any help you may need ..email me..

Great with software but not with installing hardware due to visual challenges. Suppose I could just use floppies Must admit, this is where the Korg scores one.

Thanks guys

Hi Runedog,

The E-80 can accept PCMCIA Type II cards , so what does that mean ?

1 ) You can get a PCMCIA flash drive adapter and use flash cards.

2) PCMCIA flash drive memory cards ( getting harder to find.

3) PCMCIA flash drive adapter , and use a "micro drive" either 2 Gig or 4 Gig.
I found one on eBay here is a link , but you need the type II adapter >
http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&rd=1&item=250192565294&ssPageName=STRK:MEWA:IT&ih=015

Or you could use floppies as the E-80 won`t do MP3`s , you can fit quite a few midi files on a floppy.

Getting your info from USB flash drive to E-80 , create a folder on your PC and load ALL flash drive info to that
folder , then take a USB cable with 2 different connectors and plug the square one into the E-80 and the rectangular one into your PC.
Power up the E-80 then turn on your PC .
On the E-80 there is a Solid State Disc or SSD , that needs to be unlocked , in back of the E-80 there is a small switch to unlock the internal memory. Once that is done you can permanently store your flash drive info to the E-80 SSD.

I hope this info helps !!

Now my friend , please help me !

I don`t have an E-80 , I have just read the manual.
Can you please describe in great detail the key-bed of the E-80.
1 ) How is the action ( key feel )
2 ) How is the quality of the key-bed , can you compare it to the Tyros key-bed ,
3 ) is there very much lateral "play" ( sideways )in the keys.

Last how are the buttons ?
Do they have a good tactile feel and solid construction ?

How are the sliders ? tight and true or a little sloppy ?

I truly wish you all the very best with your E-80 . I have been looking at the E-80 / Pa800 / Tyros 2 / S900.

Although I have only been able to actually play the Tyros and the S900.

So your reply will be very help full .

I have had many folks say the key-bed is good , what`s good ? I need the nitty gritty !!

Take care and again I hope I have helped and Good Luck !!

Why not post that review here, Runedog?

Then possibly some Roland users can double check to see if all the facts are correct (there are many aspects to Roland's which may not be realized by a recent owner)...

Several other E80 reviews here, too, if you use the search.

Diki, actually you are right so, here goes:

I was a pro drummer for many years and have just (up to now anyway) dabbled with keyboards. My first keyboard was a Korg so I guess this is why I took myself back along this route with the purchase of the PA800.

I have owned several Roland products in the past and I really like their build quality and I find them easy to navigate etc. Taking into account that I am registered blind (although I do have limited sight) navigation etc really has to figure highly with me.

Anyway, after using the Korg for awhile I kept getting pulled back to the E80. Although many Korg users told me I could do loads more with the PA800 (which I did not doubt) my main criteria was just to enjoy playing keyboard.

On receiving my E80 I must say it was the right move for me: The navigation around the keyboard I personally find easier than the Korg. The touch-screen is easier on the eye, brighter and, the reassuring 'click' you get whenever you select something just adds to the class of this keyboard.

I personally find the keys feel better than on the Korg board. The aftertouch seems more precise and the keys seem to have a more expensive feel to me. I can now understand why many Roland users rave about the feel of the keys on the G70, this is a keyboard I am looking to get as well as my E80.

Soundwise: I have heard some negative reviews on the forum regarding the G70 sounds. Well, again, and this is my personal opinion, I find the E80 sounds superior to the Korg PA800! Its all a matter of taste I know, and, having said this, I tried and did not like the Yammy Tyros 1 either. Cannot speak for the T2 has I have never tried this board.

The default piano on the E80 far surpasses the PA800's default piano to my ears too.

Again, may I repeat, this is only my opinion

Hi Runedog,

Thank you for your review.

I`m glad to hear that the keys are A-OK and have a good feel to them.

Is there any "play or slop " to them or are they tight.

Glad to hear you like the touch screen . I have heard that it is one of the best.

The buttons , do they also have a good tight feel and that sliders and they tight and solid as well ?

Sorry for so many questions , but as I have said there are no dealers in my area that carry , either the E-80 or the Pa800.

The most advanced arranger I could get my hands on was the Tyros 2 , and even then it was not hooked up to the Yamaha speaker system , nut one make shift monitor.

For some reason N.E. just don`t like arrangers

Anyway , best of luck to you and have fun with your E-80 !!

From what I have read , it is an amazing A-K/B

Take care,
Gary 

Hi Gary

I don't find any 'slop' what you refer to on the keys: The buttons, I personally find better than the pa800. They seem very firm and they light-up beautifully as do the T2 buttons.

The only drawback on Roley boards is that the knobs, i,e, volume etc, can come off and could get lost so my advice is to keep an eye on these; I encountered this on previous Rolands I had.

Where I do think the Korg scored was of course the USB port on the front panel. This was great for loading midis; I really miss that.

Take care buddy

Hey Runedog ,

ROFLMAO , that was a good one !!

Thanks for your help , I sent you an e-mail.

Take care,
Gary 

PS:
The slop or lateral key feel was so bad on one of my old Yammy`s that the keys started rubbing together !
