Is there a free winzip somewhere? My trial period ended and I can't open stuff now.

Zuki if you are running Windows XP or later you don't need WinZip anymore. Windows is able to unzip files directly without WinZip.

All you need to do is simply right click on any zip file and select "Open With" then pick "Choose Program". Then select "Compressed Files" rather than WinZip which is currently the default being used and check the box that says "Always Use This Program". Then voila from then on whenever you double click on a zip file Windows will automatically open a standard file Window showing all the files contents. You can then copy those files and paste them somewhere the same as you would with normal uncompressed files. It's that easy ... plus it's free cos it is part of Windows OS.

And of course you can then uninstall WinZip cos you will never need it again.

Actually the exact term used by Windows is "Compressed (zipped) Folders". And if you want to go the other way and zip up some files just highlight them and right click and select "Send To" and select "Compress (zipped) Folders". It seems that the name of the very first file becomes the name used for the zip file but you can always rename it once it is done.

Besides if you do prefer to use an application to compress and decompress files WinRar is far more versatile http://www.rarlab.com/

I don't know about the current version but the previous trial version never stopped working after the trial period but just kept nagging you each time you used it. It can handle zip, rar files and more. In fact it can even extract files from an iso image taken from a CD which can be very handy.

I use Win 98 / 20000.

Good tips Nigel. However, when I follow your instructions above, the "Send To" does not display the "Compress (zipped) Folders" option. The closest sounding option is send by using "YOU SEND IT"...which does not zip, compress or allow more than one file to be sent at a time.

If you have used a different Zip program in the past it may have removed the Windows version from the menu, so you will need to add it back in.
