Guys-

I have some friends who would like to record some Skype sessions with me. Just conversations...I have a very cheap "computer mic" that sounds ok, not great...

Would I find improvement if I used one of my regular dynamic mics like my Sennheiser 550 or SHURE 58?

I'm thinking I buy a basic adapter for the mic cable and plug it right into the cpu where I've been plugging in the traditional computer mic...

Good idea?

You should get an improvement using a "Proper" microphone but it would be even better if you could run the microphone into a mixer and feed the mixer output into the line input of the PC; the microphone pre-amplifiers in PC soundcards are usually relatively noisy.

An alternative (which I'm thinking about myself)(although I have no actual experience) is to use a condenser microphone that uses a USB connector; Samson do a couple (C01U, G-Track).

Bill we've been using the Edirol UA-1EX with much success.

The UA-1EX is available here in the UK for less that 50 pounds.... therefore added to my "Under investigation" list!

Connection question?

I plugged a 1/4" mic cable into an adapter down to a phono plug (Standard computer mic/headphone jack)...

It does not work...

Suggestions?

Terminology. Phono plug usually refers to an RCA-type plug wherein a Phone plug usually refers to a 1/4" plug/jack. Also, most computers use a mini-plug/jack (1/8"). In any case, make sure the connection remains 'stereo' throughout the chain.
