I am thinking of buying an XP-30 and was wondering if it can send out Performance Setups via sysex to cakewalk like the JV-2080
can.I just send out Sysex to set up the synths for a sequence so as not to be limited by the number of onboard Performances.

You'll get SysEx from the XP30, though it'll be slightly different. I've had trouble in the past regards to sending SysEx from my XP60 to Cakewalk but I've irradicated that problem by only using the enormously powerful onboard sequence on the XP60.

I think the XP30 will be no problem interfacing with the PC.

One thing players should note is that if the synth you buy doesn't have an onboard sequencer then you don't get that wonderful LIVE tool known as RPS (Realtime Phrase Sequencing) where you can action a loop on a recorded pattern by simply pressing the RPS button and the chosen key on the keyboard.

So much potential there in itself.

So far I haven't had any problems sending and recieving sysex from cakewalk.The problems I had were with drivers for my Opcode Studio 128X MIDI Patchbay/Interface.Opcode got bought out by Gibbson and never updated their drivers.I had MIDI timing problems from hell.The drivers don't work at all with my new Dell PIII 800.

Beware of PC interfaces.The music industry is still geared for Mac's.Maybe these new USB interfaces work better, but I lost all faith in PC interfaces.I have the 128X interfaced to my PC with a SoundBlaster MIDI interface connected to my soundcard's game port.I use my 128X as a big Merger/Thru box. I am stuck with 16 midi channels but at least I no longer have PC driver issues or need to buy an expensive Laptop computer to gig with. Instead, I use a Yamaha MDF3 (MIDI Data Filer)to gig out with. It just plays back the Standard MIDI files I create on my PC using Cakewalk Pro8. It seems to work fine.
