Hopefully, you can dodge the surgical bullet. I tore my right rotator cuff about 10 years ago while splitting firewood with a 12-pound splitting maul and wedge. The orthapod recommended surgery, but I refused because the success and recovery rate was lousy at the time. It took about 3 months of in-home therapy before I began to regain use of the arm, but within six months everything was normal. I saw the doctor about a month after it was healed, told him he was fired and went back to work.
