Spurred on by some of you guys New Year's resolutions, as of 1/1/09 I've been doing a two mile walk and a 7 mile stationary bike each day. So far I've gained two pounds. Looks like the only thing that's improved is my appetite. Can't work on too many things at once though, I'll start with the healthy eating thing 1/1/10. Good luck with YOUR resolutions.

when you want to loose weight a diet never helps.... it will be gained back double the amount whenever you stop with the diet and start your bad eatinghabbits from before...

When you want too change your life start with this...

- every day, airobics workout/sport atleast an hour.....
-3 healthy meals every day and a healthy snack every 2 hours...

Thats all you need to live healthy... when you're used to the above pattern... you can choose one moment every day to eat or drink something unhealthy... thats the only thing working in the long stretch

Well, I'm back on the diet/exercising/behaving thing...

Simply by NOT eating poorly, with zero exercising, I've already dropped 7 lbs since NYE...

Booze weighs approximately 7 lbs/gal. Sounds like you've been able to get a gallon of booze out of your system since NYE. Good work.

You have to keep in mind that everyone's body is different and will respond differently to diet and exercise. A workout and diet routine that works for one person may not work for the next. You have to find what works for you.

I keep in shape and lift weights at least 5 days a week. I manage to keep in shape with just a 30 minute workout. Diet is a big thing.., but not always going to work. I will say the main thing to keep in mind with eating is PORTION size. That's really the big killer. Many people stay in shape by eating the same foods and exercise.., they just don't go overboard on the portions. We're a nation hell bent on "SuperSizing" everything. We treat every meal like an all you can eat buffet. Plus so many of us have been raised by parent's who said "finish your plate".

Another thing to consider is "snacking". Empty fillers will make it very hard to lose weight. Plus a very important thing to remember is set a "cut off time" for your eating. People don't often realize how much weight they can gain in their sleep simply because they pigged out shortly before going to bed.

After my dinner..., I'll have one very small snack. I will not eat past 7pm either. I don't even eat really healthy foods either (and to be honest what's really healthy today when you consider it costs more to buy a tomato grown in dirt than one "genetically" grown). Today's foods are so overprocessed and full of chemicals it's not even funny. You can't even trust the labels anymore because they've been fudging those. Plus other nations won't even take our food. They'd rather starve before taking food from the US.

Geez.., look at what the food is doing to our kids. Their bodies are maturing so quickly from all the growth hormones in the meats. When I was 13/14 years old you could take a girl the same age.., place her on her back and slide her under a door! Today you can't even tell which one's the mom and which one's the daughter... YIKES!!!!

I still eat fast food, pizza, deep fried foods, ect and manage to keep my weight down. I just eat in moderation. Again everyone is different and for myself I'm lucky. I'm not a young'n anymore but still (how I don't know) have the metab of a 12 year old.

Chas - thanks for keeping things on the LITE side. Wish I could say the same for some of our MORE SERIOUS posters. Although this is a serious subject, I think you were trying to put a humorous spin on it.

Let the flailing begin...

First and foremost, losing weight is simply a fact of burning more calories than you consume. It's not rocket science--it's common sense.

Secondly, the amount of calories consumed during exercise is minimal at best, and because the person doing the exercise feels they have expended a huge number of calories, they tend to overeat to compensate for this.

Finally, lowering and maintaining a healthy weight usually requires a lifestyle change, which most folks are not willing to do. The South Beach Diet is a structured program that, if properly followed, will bring about rapid weight loss. And, if you follow the program religiously, including the phase three segment, you will keep those shedded pounds off for life.

Exercise will make you healthier by increasing muscle mass, increase stamina, improve lung and heart function and improve brain function--these are proven facts.

The reason I, and many other forum members, recommend the South Beach Diet is because IT WORKS. Three years ago I lost 55 pounds in just 5 months using this program, and although I've gained back 15 pounds during the past three years, it was because I was dumb enough to get sick and end up on Prednisone for an extended period of time. DNJ lost more than 100 pounds in less than a year, and a host of others reported similar weight losses, of which the vast majority have kept those pounds off.

The secret to success with any diet is to follow the program exactly as spelled out. If you deviate from the structured weight-loss program you will not lose those pounds. If you revert to your old eating habits that caused the weight gain initially you will regain the lost weight and continue to gain.

Good luck Chas, I'm confident you can do this.

Gary
