My condolences...

Coming from a family with absolutely ZERO musical ability (some would say I haven't changed that appreciably ), I can't tell you how envious I am of people that grew up in musical families, and especially of those who watch their kids carry on the tradition, even if not (maybe hopefully not!) at the professional level...

That's what happened to me. My mother was a concert pianist and later played organ in church, so we always had one around.
I took piano lessons for about a year when I was six, then later played trumpet in high school, but all along I was tinkering with the piano or organ. My mother became both proud and jealous, because she couldn't play happy birthday without the music, or memorizing it. I could do it either way, reading or by chord structure. She never could understand.
I exposed my kids to the music and they enjoy listening and singing. Who knows, maybe when they mature some more they'll get back to wanting to play.

One of my real pleasures is my trio, consisting of my oldest son on upright and electric bass and my grandson on drums and me on guitar, vibes and keys. We're playing society jobs now, and the kids are improvcing nicely. Daughter played flute for years but gave it up a long time ago.

Russ ... I've said it before, I really envy you for that (amongst OTHER reasons )...
That has to be a very special bond and enjoyment ...
I've said that I had the occasion to do just a couple of gigs with my son when he played electric bass in high school ... VERY proud moments ...

We always had music in our house ... my mom sang really well and loved all types of music, so we heard Italian opera and folk, big band, country western. the pop singers of that time, etc ...
She would sing as a 'walk on guest' at the local clubs and sang with Lou Monte a number of times... http://www.loumonte.com/

In the mid 50's my two sisters and I would sing 3 part harmony doo-wop ...

As for my my kids, our son quit bass when he went to college, our daughter took piano lessons for about a year ... that's it ...

My wife and I are thinking of 'sponsoring' our grandkids if they want to take up an instrument...
