Can patches from the Performance List be used in a performance setup?
Secondly why can I only create sound from the perfomance list when midi channel "1" is selected in my software (Cakewalk)?
Thirdly maybe some 'Oh Great Wise One' can clue me in on the whole performace mode thing altogether as it seems that I can't get a thing from the user's manual.- Please help!!

I'm not sure what you mean by a Performance List but presumably you want to use the JV1010 as a multi timbral synth in Performance mode. If so, you need to send a bit of Sysex data to the JV1010 and then select Performances using Bank Select/Prog
Changes. Send me an Email if you want the Sysex data and anything else you might need.

I also want to use the JV1010's performance mode as muti-timbre setup. Is it possible to do all the settings (patches for each channel, panning, level, etc. ) and save it onto a user space on the front panel of the JV without using the Sound Diver software?

Please help.

Regards,
Stephen

Okay, correct me if I'm wrong, but this is how I figured it out. Forgive me if this is long winded, I'm assuming nothing here:

1) You cannot edit ANYTHING without Sound Diver (or a reasonable fascimile). Go to eMagic's website and make sure you have the latest version (The one that shipped with my JV was buggy as hell).

2) You must first set your JV to respond to performance (bank) changes in Sound Diver. Here's where I'm fuzzy on the details. Look at the Sound Diver documentation to be sure, but you must dedicate a channel to a bank change. I use channel 16 - you can select it in Sound Diver...look at the sketchy doc that came on the CD - it's one of the first things they cover.

3) Then in Sound Diver, assuming you've requested all the parameters, select the POP BALLAD performance from the USER PERFORMANCE. That's the easiest one to config for multi setup because all the voices/channels/etc are already set up.

4) Then just select all the patches you want in each channel. I usually TRANSMIT after each change to update the JV. Maybe this isn't necessary, but it's better to be safe than sorry. Select all the volumes/pans you want for each channel (I DON'T THINK THEY RESPOND TO CAKEWALK VOL/PAN SETTINGS). Also select which channel you want the effects bus to run through. That option is in the box in the upper right corner. I think JV1010 only routes the EFX through one channel. For example, you don't want all your patches to run through an ORGAN channel, because your pianos will have leslie efx, etc. Then for each channel, in the last columm, select how you want each sound routed. Mess around with this and audition your changes to make sure you select the best routing for each patch.

5) If you are running MIDI through to any other multi boxes (I also use the Alesis QS6.1 in my setup), turn that channel off (unless you want to play the same notes through different patches). Otherwise your sequence will be doubled through both channels and you may get trumpet hits along with your strings patch.

6) Here's the most IMPORTANT STEP: Make sure you select "STORE" from the MIDI menu, otherwise the JV forgets everything once you turn it off. I stored my first Performance mix under User 1, just overwrite the one that is already there. Then for each Performance mix you want (up to 32), follow the same steps.

7) Now. In Cakewalk, make sure you have the JV1010 instrument definitions. They ship with the latest Cakewalk, or you can find them on the web. Assign each channel to the JV Patches, and then assign the channel that you send the Performance Bank changes to the JV Performance ins def. I default all my patches to "--" and all my vol/pan etc to "--" because they've already been set up in the bank on the JV.

8) Assign each channel in your sequence to the corresponding patch on your JV, depending on the sounds you want.

9) In the channel you've selected as your bank change channel, select Controller 0 for bank selection method, then USER under bank, and "001" (or whatever performance bank you want) under PATCH.

10) Here's another area that the JV is really weak. You cannot access that bank without playing that MIDI/Cakewalk file from the start to call up your Performance Bank. When it is powered on, it defaults to a bank full of pianos or something.

So it's a little bit of legwork and programming, but by trying different things out, and making sure Sound Diver, Cakewalk, and your JV unit all speak the same language, this should work.

If there are better ways, please advise...again, this is what works for me. Sorry for such a long post!

A good description by X Factor. Its good to see that JV1010 users "in the know " take the trouble to help out the newbies. He's right about the OEM version of SDiver, it does seem as buggy as hell! I'm experimenting with a SDiver-like prog called ChangeIt. It looks more user friendly than SDiver although it doesn't support the 1010
directly (1080 + 2080 supported). I'm going to try and get hold of some 1010 Sysex Transmit/Receive commands for it so I can
setup my own Generic settings for the 1010. http://aragon.iitb.fhg.de/moss/changeit.html

Dear X Factor, thank you for your explanation. I really want to try out your method but I just don't have the sound diver software with me. I purchased my JV1010 in Japan and the package dosen't include the CD-Rom. Would any of you be able to send me a copy of the software? You can also reply to my email: orange316@ctimail.com

Thank you very much
