All that I want to do is - Tell my JV1010 to play USER PERFORMANCE No:28. How do I get a Yamaha DX7II to do it. This really is NOT funny. I know that the solution must be simple - 'cos the manual says that it can be done - and we all KNOW that manuals are always right - if you can break the code.

Not having either units makes this hard to answer, so take this information lightly.
I know that the DX7 only had 32 memory locations, so I'm not sure if it sends program change messages above 32.

As the JV1010 is very much a preset unit you carn't even move it to a location that the DX7 can access.
Using a computer it should be easy, to do it from a old keyboard could be tricky.
Perhaps you should look for a second-hand JV1080, as this can store user patches, and performances.

You will need to set the MIDI control channel to something (that you don't intend to use for music - channel 16 is usually a safe bet), then you can use the control channel to send patch change messages to select performaces. I have no idea whether the DX7 can send patch changes on one channel, and notes on another.

There are system exclusive messages you can send the JVs to switch remotely between the different modes, and choose any patch you want, but I doubt whether this could be programmed from the DX7.

By the way, the JV-1010 has the same structures and the 1080 and 2080. The main differences are only one expansion slot (but built in session card), and no LCD display which really means it's best controlled by sequences or a PC.

But you should be able to set it up with your favourite patches in the user area, and control the patches from any keyboard (because single-sound patches use the same control channel as they do for music).

Performances are designed to be multi-timbral (repsond to up to 16 different channels simulataneously), as well as other smarts like layers, key & velocity splits, so it's not possible to select patches on the same channel as music. Otherwise, there would be no way to change the patch of individual part of each patch.

By setting a control channel, you will only have 15 parts available for mulititimral performances, so that's why it's usually diabled, so you can use the full 16 parts. But then the only way to choose performances is with system exclusive messages, (or the dials on the front maybe - I've never used mine!)

As I said, I don't use JV1010 dials - I run everything from SysEx messages, and maybe that's what this JV is best for. But you might be able to set a control channel from the dials - I know it has several setup modes printed on top of the case, and explained in the manual.

Otherwise, you'll need to use SoundDiver to set it, or use these sysex messages:

Set GM Mode Off
F0 7E 7F 09 02 F7

Set Performanec Mode ON

(so far, you can definitely do this from the front panel)

Lastly, set the control channel to 16:
